on the second pic, i toyed around with the gradient tool...but it just doesnt look right cuz of the lighting. if i smudged the lighting, i think it could look better. but thats for another day.
i didnt notice until now, but he seems more grey, than black. oh well.

Phil, stop beating yourself up. You keep saying that you're preportions are bad, but I've seen people get away with things a million times worse than what you draw.
I'm going to be blunt now. There are only three problems with your picture here;
1: the tallons; they seem to be placed on the wrong area of the arm.
2: the belt; the pouches are disspreportionate and the buckle is misshapen.
3: The ears; one is shorter than the other.
Other than that it's great, sure the preportions are a little off, but people we admire like Jim Lee only a few steps above you. Don't stop practicing because I'm telling you this, but you're very close to the big leagues; you can make great images in a short amount of time. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.
And yes, you do give them big feet, but it adds character to your drawings.
Never start with the head; the victim gets all fuzzy!

Nice job, Phil. This muscular, more comic book style drawing is a cool spin on the animated character. I can tell you've made progress since the illustrations you first posted a year or so ago. And I'd have to agree with about everything Razhwurz said, too - good criticisms.

Rashwurz is quite right Phil, you're always really self critical and you shouldn't be!
Re proportions and stuff; It's art - it's not science! (don't get me wrong, if his arms reached down to the floor, if the suit was pink, or if the feet got much bigger it wouldn't be right). But having said that, that's NOT to say you won't/can't get better still.
Your stuff is good.

Actually, I'd say this type of drawing is a bit of a science. One needs a great perception of human anatomy as well as anything else they want to draw if they want to draw it accurately. And it's good that Phil takes note of his mistakes so that he can learn and develop from them. But I also see what you're saying; it involves a great deal of creativity. Plus, no one's perfect and we don't need to bash ourselves for our lack of skill.

i really like the second one phil, and the reason i think one ear is shorter then the other is cuz its from the side which makes the smaller one farther away

Art is a science, you need to know about lighting, colors, proportions, geomitrics and anatomy.

For it to be that much smaller, the ear would have to be attached to his shoulder.
But anyway, one of my favorite artists is Tim Sale, and his art has a tendancy to have the proportions a tad bit off; your proportions are better than his. Your art is great.

Now that's good Phil!!!
Art isn't a science; sorry, but it's just not.
I'm not remotely putting it down or suggesting it's easy (I wouldn't even try and draw stuff), but the good thing about art is the fact you can have proportions a little off, it doesn't make it wrong. It's all about the look/image you create. Sure you can go too far (see previous post), but even if you did, it's still not actually incorrect.
Something immediately springs to mind as an example of the point I'm (at least) trying to make; Batman TAS, Batman's jaw - it's about 5 times the size of what it should be, and it's totally deliberate (I even remember it prompted a conversation in one of the extra features - it was originally drawn that way to add visual impact). I personally don't lke the jawline (in real life that would actually be considered a deformity) - but I can see where they were coming from, and it certainly doesn't prevent me rating Batman TAS as one of my favourite ever TV shows (they nailed it bang on). But if art was science, Batman's jaw wouldn't have looked like that......
I think that makes sense.
And as a parting thought on recent good Batman art - Matt Wagner's Batman and the Monster Men - it was beautifully done. There's lots of great stuff out there - but Monster Men was class.
Gotta go to work (i'm late).......................

Art is a science!!! Believe me it is!! If you've ever taken an art class you'd realize that. And like you were sying about Batman's jaw, the artists had to learn the scientific and corect part of art first: anatomy, propotion, lighting, ect... then they can take artistic license and stylize it a little. You have to know the rules, before you can break them.

i've never taken any art classes. i'm in one now, but it's art 1...and i practically know everything in it. all the basic stuff...drawing geometric shapes, drawing things from looking at it, etc.
i hope to takle atleast 3 art classes, and major in art in college. i find it so funny that jim lee majored in psychology and ended up as an amazing comic artist. maybe i should major in psychology.
