Hello fellow Bat-fans,

I've been a professional illustrator for a little over a year now for companies like Wizards of the Coast and FFG, but I've yet to meet the right contacts with DC to get any jobs painting covers.

That said, I finally got tired of waiting and decided to whip up a collage of my favorite brooding vigilante and his vintage foes. I hope you enjoy it!

If you'd like to see more of my published work, don't hesitate to check out my site here: www.ryanbargerpor...

Sweet Jesus. And you can't get a gig?

That is off the chain.

This guy goes into the hospital, okay?...
His wife's just had a baby and he can't wait to see them both.
So he meets the doctor and he says, "Oh, Doc, I've been so worried. How are they?"
And the Doctor smiles and says, "They're fine, just fine. Your wife's delivered a healthy baby boy and they're both in tip-top form.
"You're one lucky guy."
So the guy rushes into the maternity ward with his flowers.
But it's empty.
His wife's bed is empty.
"Doc?" he says and turns around and the doctor and all the nurses wave their arms and scream in his face.

"APRIL FOOL! YOU'RE WIFE'S DEAD AND THE BABY'S A SPASTIC!!"

It's very difficult to get an audience with DC or Marvel these days. Even though I've done considerable work for game companies, the comic guys won't look at e-mails or snail mails, generally. If you're not at a convention and in their face with a portfolio, you don't exist.

That said, I'm hoping I can crank out a few more like this one before the next comic con in NYC, and maybe get a meeting then.

Thanks for the compliment!

Whoa! That's so cool! Really good work.

Yeah, I can imagine how hard it would be getting a job with DC or Marvel. Hope you get one though.

Beautiful work! I especially like your take on Freeze, Riddler, and Joker: a perfect cross between realism and fantasy.

Wow, that's amazing work. I think your Two-Face looks like Nathan Petrelli from Heroes.

The only thing stopping you from success is doubt.

Thank you for the compliment. It's funny you mention Nathan, since I had the exact same thought after I finished Two-Face. It wasn't an intentional design choice on my part, but I remember thinking it was strangely appropriate.

Man that is Awsome. I checked out your other work and it's great I'm sure you'll get your chance in one of those firms and if not you can illustrate your own.

Ryan, that portrait is nothing short of great. You know, there's a local get together of comic fans in my area that I've gone to about three times. One of the guys is an illustrator and claims that he simply sent DC some of his work and they replied saying they would use the art on T-shirts and other merchandise. I find that very hard to believe, especially considering his work, while good, was so dismal compared to yours. There's tons of hungry artists out there wanting to work on DC and Marvel, and of all the junk I see them put out, I can't imagine why they wouldn't snatch up someone like you.

I do notice now how the Bat-signal of your portrait seems very stretched. Was that just intended to make it readable?

Thanks again for the high praise everyone, it's very fulfilling to see that the community enjoys my rendition of the Caped Crusader and his villains. If the fans like it, then hopefully DC will feel the same when I finally manage to score an audience with them!

As far as the elongated/enlarged Bat-signal, you hit that observation right on the nose----I needed to make sure it was 'readable' or at least recognizable behind the cape, and didn't want it to be confused with a garden variety spotlight.

Also, the angle at which the signal hits the clouds, the distortion of the cloud-shapes themselves, etc would all cause the signal to look different every time it was activated.
