Gotham After Dark Series

- -

Title:Wonderland

Main Characters:Erin Knightly; Jervis Tetch (The Mad Hatter); Bruce Wayne (Batman); Commissioner Jim Gordon; Jonathan Crane (The Scarecrow);

Pairing: Erin/Jervis

Synopsis:

Curiouser and curiouser....

Gotham City has become someone's own personal playground and nobody can seem to identify who is leaving their calling card during their crime sprees. Gordon and his men are on edge because not only has the situation gotten worse but Jonathan Crane has escaped from Arkham and is on the loose as well.

Batman stumbles on several crime scenes, including a restaurant, which had been broken into and a table had been set up like the table during "The Mad Tea Party" in Alice In Wonderland. Nothing from the place had been taken, which is highly unusual with most criminals. And only a card with the numbers: 10/6, has been left under a tea cup. The Dark Knight is still baffled about who this criminal is and is unlike any other he's encountered...

Another interesting story Erin and great artwork...reminds me of an episode of the old SUPERFRIENDS show where Mr. Mxyzptlk turned them into characters from WIZARD OF OZ.

I wanted to do something "Alice In Wonderland" themed for the poster.

I have the day off tomorrow (Tues. Jan-19th) and I might get a start on writing the story.

I am still working on how to in-corporate Erin into the beginning of it. Obviously, it's going to end up being Jervis/Erin romance. But the way I am writing this, nobody really knows who is committing the crimes in Gotham until somewhere in the middle of the story.

So, yeah, still working out a few bugs in my head.

Sounds great. It actually sounds like something that Nolan would put in between two Batman movies in maybe a comic series or something....

Really? Oh, wow. It's too bad I couldn't write for DC or whoever does that stuff. LOL!!!

I've become a fan Jervis Tetch (the Mad Hatter) & because of my weird mood of wanting to go to bed early and stuff, I've been having all sorts of ideas being thrown around in my head & since I AM a fan of 'Alice in Wonderland' myself, for some reason, I can truly write for this much more easier.

Thanks for the support you guys!! I truly appreciate it!!

Intro: We're All Mad Here

Commissioner Jim Gordon rubbed his eyes and then placed his glasses back on his face. He was looking over what appeared to be a 'clean crime scene'. The men and woman of his unit were baffled, had become baffled. There was nothing broken, no forced entry, nothing.

"Did we find anything?" Gordon asked, although he knew the answer as the question left his lips.

"Nothing sir. The tea shop is clean", Allen replied, he then held up in his hand a neatly folded piece of paper, "Though, Andrews and I found this while doing a sweep of the tables".

Gordon took the neatly folded piece of paper from Allen and opened it. It was a poem but the words were lost on Gordon. Allen just shrugged.

"The Jabberwocky?" Gordon muttered under his breath.

"Whoever this guy is. He's polite enough not to steal, break or do anything except have a cup of tea and write poetry", Allen commented.

"This is no ordinary criminal", a gruff voice spoke out.

Allen and Gordon turned to see Batman emerge into the building. There were at least five cop cars out front but the bat had managed to secretly gain access, once again. Neither Allen nor Gordon cared, they had respect for him.

"It's going to be hard to pin point this guy's next move. He's left no traces of anything. Ramiraze couldn't even find finger prints. If he's a criminal, he's a pretty damn good one", Allen exclaimed, turning and walking away.

Batman turned to Gordon, "Have you gotten any leads?"

"None. The worst part is, while my team is searching for this mysterious man", Gordon sighed, his shoulders sagging, "Scarecrow escaped Arkham just last night. We haven't been able to find him either".

"I'll find Scarecrow. You find whoever it is you're looking for", Batman remarked.

Gordon nodded as the Dark Knight turned and left. Gordon turned over the piece of paper in his hand and reread the poem. He had no idea what the Jabberwocky was or who it was or whatever the poem was or meant. It was all so full of non-sense and confusion. This whole thing had started a good month ago and was continuing.

The Commissioner placed the piece of paper into his coat pocket. If non-sense and confusion seemed to be this person's angle than it wasn't the Joker or the Riddler they were dealing with. This wasn't like any other criminal Gotham had come to fear. In fact, as Batman had put it,

'This was no ordinary criminal'.

Chapter One:Curiouser and Curiouser

Finding a needle in a haystack is rather difficult when the needle isn't there to begin with and you just wasted half your time looking. Needless to say, it had been weeks since the police had found any clues. All they had in their possession was several poems, hand written and apparently written word for word. Gordon had not really slept well, trying to figure out how to find this mysterious person who had claimed Gotham for their own use.

The Commissioner had begun to stay up late, drinking large amounts of coffee, staying at work late. Sleeping only in small dozes. Allen had gone to the roof of the GCPD building and turned on the Bat-signal. He knew Batman was looking for Scarecrow but Scarecrow seemed to be under their radar as well. And it was time to call in Gotham's greatest detective. It was time to get down to the bottom of these mysterious crime waves.

So, Batman had agreed to help the police. He knew his time was worth spent looking for this mysterious "poem writer" who seemed to breaking into random buildings and leaving nothing but a piece of paper. Unfortunately, they were soon to be wrong about everything. As Batman rode in the new and improved Tumbler, he picked up something on his scanner. A police report was being issued that the restaurant, "The Red Rabbit", in Gotham's China Town, had been found with it's front door wide open.

Batman rode the Tumbler into China Town, arriving about twenty minutes later. The police seemed to have given up. Batman pushed open the front door, which had been left unlocked. He stepped into the place. The whole room had been cleared of it's tables and chairs. Except for...

The rectangular table in the middle of the room. The table had twelve chairs sitting at it. It was set up with plates, silverware, tea cups, and all sorts of contents including jam and butter. Batman walked around the table, looking at it. Looking for anything. Something than caught his eye. A piece of card stock was sitting under an over turned tea-cup. Batman picked up the tea-cup and placed it back on the table. He then picked up the piece of card-stock. The only thing written on it were the numbers:

10 / 6

Which were written at an angle on the card stock.

Batman turned the card stock over but there was nothing else written on it. He took the card stock with him as he left the restaurant and headed back into Gotham. He brought the evidence to Gordon's office, luckily the Commissioner was still there.

"I found this in The Red Rabbit", Batman stated, tossing the card stock onto Gordon's desk.

"Did you see?...", Gordon went to ask.

"The table? Yes, I did", Batman answered, nodding his head.

Gordon picked up the card-stock, looking it over, "I wonder what this means", he said.

"Does the name Lewis Carroll mean anything to you?" Batman asked.

"Carroll is renowned author. Why?" Gordon inquired.

"These crimes are based on Alice In Wonderland or at least that's my guess", Batman told him.

"I know someone down at the Gotham Library who reads Carroll's books. She could be of some help", Gordon exclaimed.

"Nobody from the public should be involved", Batman replied, "None of this information should be leaked. Whoever is doing this-", but he was interrupted by the commissioner.

"She's possibly the only person who can help us. I know her because she helps Barbra with her school work. Trust me on this", Gordon told him flatly.

Batman just nodded and said nothing else. He trusted the Commissioner's judgment.

Chapter Two: Go Ask Alice

Having finally gotten a good eight hours sleep, thankful for a break in the case, the Commissioner set out to the Gotham Public Library the following afternoon. The person in question he was looking for greeted him with a wave from behind the library's front desk. She was youthful looking with dark red hair, light blue eyes and a warm smile.

"Good afternoon Commissioner", Erin Knightly replied as she opened up the "Return" bin and started taking out all the returned library books, stacking them on the desk, "What brings you to the library on a beautiful day like this?"

Gordon rested his arms on top of the front desk, he smiled in a gentle, tired manner, "I was hoping if you wouldn't mind helping me with something", he said.

"Oh, of course. Anything in particular?" Erin asked.

Gordon took out several pieces of paper and the card stock from his coat pocket. He handed them to her. Erin took a look at the items.

"We don't know who is leaving these all over Gotham but they're apart of the "Alice In Wonderland" crimes that have been popping up as of recently", Gordon replied, speaking quietly.

"They're definitely of Lewis Carroll's work. I just finished reading "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for the tenth time. A little light reading before bed", Erin exclaimed, nodding.

"We need your help Ms. Knightly", Gordon stated, "Your the only person in Gotham who knows any of this stuff", he gestured with his hand, waving it, "My men, Batman, myself, we're at a loss as to what to do".

"Commissioner, I don't know...I mean...I might not be the only person who knows all of this stuff. Alice In Wonderland was very much loved by all kinds of people", Erin pointed out, "I don't know if I am the right person to help".

"I swear twenty-four hour protection, I'll have a few of my men stationed at the exits of this library, I'll have someone escort you home every day after work. I promise nothing will happen to you if you just let me bring you the evidence and have you analyze it", Gordon told her.

"Well, if I am only looking at it, I guess it couldn't hurt", Erin said, nodding her head, "I'll help as much as I can".

"Thank you. I'll call and let you know what we find. I'll have Allen and Bullock come right over later today before the library closes", Gordon replied.

Erin handed Gordon the folded pieces of paper and the card stock. Gordon pocketed them and nodded to her before turning and leaving. Erin took in a deep sigh and then picked up the stack of books that needed to be put back. She wondered around putting the books back in their original spots. As she entered the Fiction section with the last three books, she noticed one book was sticking out, laying length ways.

After putting the other books back, Erin walked over and slipped the book out and went to put it in it's upturned position. An envelope was sticking out between the pages. Erin then noticed the book she was holding was a copy of "Alice In Wonderland". She slipped the envelope out. It had her name on it and her name was written in pen and in cursive. She put the book back and carried the envelope back to the front desk.

She stood behind the front desk and opened up the envelope. It didn't explode or smoke with toxic chemicals or do anything except give her a folded piece of paper. She unfolded the piece of paper. There were a few words written on it. The words were written in the same cursive writing,

Twinkle twinkle little bat!
How I wonder what you're at!...
Up above the world you fly
like a tea tray in the sky

She stared at the poem for a long time before hearing some footsteps which meant the college students were arriving from their afternoon courses at the University. Erin slipped the piece of paper back in it's envelope and hid the envelope in a drawer. Barbara Gordon and a few of her friends came in a second later. Erin waved cheerfully to them, acting as though nothing had happened.

Not that the envelope with the piece of paper was bad. In fact, her curiosity was perked. She opened up the drawer and took out the envelope again and reread the little poem. Who on earth could have gotten into the library without her notice? Unless they had come in before hand. She worked in the afternoons, which meant they had to have come in the morning.

But what also perked her curiosity even more was that...this person knew her. They knew when she worked and that she was the one who put the books back on the shelf. Maybe it was just a coincidence. A lot of people saw her in the library, saw her put away books when they were returned and things like that.

It just intrigued her that they were able to get in and out without so much as anyone noticing. It was as if...it was if they just disappeared down some sort of rabbit hole. The very thought made Erin laugh to herself as she re-hid the envelope again. The very thought wasn't out of realm of possibility, in her mind, anything was possible.

Chapter Three: Through The Looking Glass

Scarecrow walked along a dark corridor through one of Old Gotham's buildings. The mud and dirt under his feet cracked and popped but nothing else was heard, save some mice who scurried around through small hole like tunnels they'd made in the walls. Scarecrow paid them no attention. He reached a room with some cracked shelving and moved the shelves aside. He'd hidden a box full of his fear toxins in this room. As he removed the box, someone had slipped into the room with him. It was too dark to really see who it was.

"What do you want?" Crane asked in a cold, casual manner, though not caring who it was. They were interrupting him.

"You should mean what you say. Not say what you mean", came the quiet voice.

"That makes no sense", Crane replied.

"Ah, but it does. To me anyway", the voice exclaimed, almost laughing, "But I must be quick, I'm very, very late".

"Well, what do you want?" Crane repeated, getting annoyed.

"Who said I wanted anything", the voice stated.

Crane set down his box of toxins and stood up straight. However, whoever it was who had interrupted him, had left. Foot steps died at the end of the hallway. Crane sighed in aggravation and picked up his box of toxins, leaving the room the way he had came.

***********************************

It was closing time for the library. Erin disliked when she was the last to leave but someone had to it. The poem she had found kept playing over and over again in her mind. She couldn't help but think about it. She had spent the entire afternoon trying not to take out the envelope and read it. It was maddening, however. As she put the last of the index cards back into their filing system, foot steps made her jump slightly.

Batman approached her a second later. Erin wondered how on earth he was able to sneak in without her knowing. She shut the index card box.

"There's a police squad car outside for you", Batman replied, "Gordon said he knew someone who could help with the current case".

"Yes well, lucky me, huh?" Erin stated.

Batman followed her over to the front desk. Erin put on her coat and then opened up the drawer taking out the envelope. Batman frowned even more. He put his hand out.

"Could I see that?" He asked.

"Sure", Erin said, rather confused, "I found it today over in the fiction section. It had been hidden in one of the copies for Alice in Wonderland".

Batman opened the envelope and took out the piece of paper. He noticed the hand writing was the same as the other evidence Gordon had found. However, the cursive writing indicated and hinted a romantic gesture. Still, it was concerning to the Dark Knight.

"I'll have to tell Gordon you're off the case", Batman remarked.

"But why?" Erin inquired.

"Because you just became part of it", Batman stated, "The same person implicating the "Alice In Wonderland" crimes just got into contact with you without you knowing".

He didn't hand her the poem back, instead put it in one of the small containers on his utility belt, he'd give it to one of the officers. Erin didn't have time to ask questions or argue because the Dark Knight was escorting her out to the police cruiser where Bullock and Allen were waiting.

"What's the Bat doin' here?" Bullock asked.

Allen said nothing as he got out, walking around the other side to open the back door for Erin.

"Take her to Gordon's office. It isn't safe for her to be by herself", Batman exclaimed, he took out the envelope and handed it to Allen, "And make sure this is given to the Commissioner".

Erin slipped into the back seat of the cruiser as Allen nodded to the vigilante, taking the envelope. Allen gently shut the back door and got into the passenger seat of the cruiser. Batman took off as the cruiser headed back to the station.

***********************************

Rameriaz walked into Gordon's office, she placed an envelope on his desk.

"I just found this in your mail sir", Rameriaze said.

Gordon carefully opened up the envelope and pulled out a small torn piece of note book paper. Etched on the paper was a riddle.

"Why is a raven like a writing desk?" Gordon commented aloud, reading the words on the paper, he then looked at Rameriaz.

As Gordon had received the envelope, a car had pulled up behind the police cruiser.

"This guy is tail gatin'", Bullock replied.

"Just let them pass us", Allen told him.

However the car did not want to pass them. Erin turned around in her seat. Her light blue eyes widened.

"It's the White Rabbit and the March Hare!" Erin stated.

"The what?" Allen asked, turning in his seat.

But a second later, the police cruiser received a flat tire. Bullock swore under his breath.

"I'm calling this in", Allen remarked, picking up the walkie.

He got through to Rameriaze a second later.

"We need back up. Some lunatics just flattened a tire on the cruiser", Allen told her.

"What kind of lunatics?" Gordon asked, standing at Rameriaz's side.

"Erin said they were the White Rabbit and the March Hare", Allen replied.

Gordon swore under his breath. He grabbed his keys off his desk and ran out the front door.

"Jim is on his way Allen, hold on", Rameriaze stated, though she had a slight feeling Gordon wouldn't reach the cruiser in time.

***********************************

The only thing now is...

does Erin know Jervis prior to when this story started??

That's the only thing that's bugging me. If they were friends before hand or something like that.

Obviously he knows her. So, I'm either going with:

1. They were friends and he likes-likes her.

or...

2. He secretly likes her but they had never actually met each other.

or something along those lines.

Lol you're welcome... You should write a story that's focused more so on some of the heroes... Of course my suggestion would be to focus it on Nightwing that's my favorite bat family member

Chapter Four : Down the Rabbit Hole

Erin was trying very hard not to scream as the police cruiser came to a screeching halt. Three of the four tires had been shot at, making it hard for the car to go any further. Allen and Bullock got out of the car as the other car came to a stop behind them. Erin slowly peaked over the back seat and looked through the rear window. Two men got out of the front seat. One was dressed as the White Rabbit, the other was the March Hare. They weren't that intimidating in the least but they looked as though they were trained to kill.

Erin looked over to see a nearby alleyway. She needed to escape. Let the cops fight. She didn't want to get involved. She didn't even know what was going on either. All of this Alice In Wonderland talk and now it was like Wonderland had come to life in Gotham City. It was interesting yes but frightening as well. Her mind reeled as she tried to think this through. She took a deep breath and bolted from the car. She didn't stop to see if any of them noticed as she took off into the alleyway. She wanted to put a good distance between herself and the fighting. She didn't care much for fighting and the whole situation just frightened her.

The darkness of the alleyway consumed her as she passed several feet of brick wall, until coming into an intersection of back streets of dumpsters, trash cans, mud puddles, broken up concrete, and small pebbles loosened from the brick walls. Erin fell against one of the walls. It was quiet, save for the sounds of gun fire from what seemed to be the distant shoot out going on. Erin decided it was not the smartest thing to stay here but she couldn't exactly decided which way to go either. After a few minutes, walking up each way, she saw the corner store's flashing light up on her left. She sighed with relief.

Leaving the somewhat horrific scene behind her, she found herself a street over and out front of the Cash 'N Carry. Erin leaned against the brick wall just outside of the small corner store. She took a few deep breathes still. Allen and Bullock would be furious that she took off but of course, she wasn't safe there either. She just wanted to go home. It would be another four blocks to Robson Park, her apartment building was just across the street from there.

Sighing with slight exhaustion, Erin went to walk past the convenient store when two men came out. They were just ordinary street druggies. Nothing put punks to the cops. And they didn't look all that nice either. One of them spotted Erin but she turned and took off down the sidewalk. They caught to her and dragged her into the alleyway, holding her against the alleyway wall. From the looks of the paper bag in one of their hands, they'd just robbed the convenient store.

Scarecrow was passing through the alleyway when he noticed what was going on. Not that he was the type to step into a situation like this, however, he recognized the red head they had pinned against the wall. As Jonathan Crane, he'd gone into Gotham's library, where she worked. He had never spoken to her but he knew she was rather nice. Getting a hold of one of his small capsule's of fear toxin, he bit down on it and then tossed it into the alleyway. Rushing in, because it didn't affect him, Crane grabbed Erin as the two men fell to their knees. Crane covered Erin's mouth and nose with his hand so she wouldn't inhale any of it.

He let go of her the second they were away from the toxins. Erin coughed slightly and wobbled a little as she tried to keep her footing. She looked at him for a second, backing away. Crane just looked at her. He could feel her fear but he didn't get any closer. Foot steps approached them a second later. Crane turned to see who it was. Erin looked as well but from the very little toxin she inhaled by accident, she was rather out of it. It was the March Hare. Apparently he'd gotten away from the police.

"Run", Crane ordered, looking at Erin.

Erin didn't have to be asked twice. She didn't even consider what was going on. It had been a strange night but she once again found herself running. Not that she was very fast to begin with. She was never into sports or anything like that. She wondered why that strange man had helped her in the first place. However, Gotham was full of strange men.

Jim Gordon found Allen and Bullock's police cruiser. He got out of the car and looked in but Erin was gone. Allen had the White Rabbit in cuffs and had him sitting on the side of the road. Bullock was nursing a broken nose and was leaning against the car.

"Where's Erin?" Gordon asked.

"She took off I suspect. But the March Hare went after her", Allen told him.

Gordon sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose and turned the only person they had in custody.

"Who do you work for?" Gordon asked.

"The Mad Hatter, who else?" The White Rabbit stated.

Gordon sighed in frustration. He had no idea what that meant. But he had a lot more to worry about. He turned to Allen after a second or so.

"Let's bring him in and find out what the heck is happening to this city. More importantly, I want Erin Knightly found and made sure she isn't hurt", Gordon ordered.

"Yes sir", Allen exclaimed, nodding, he paused and then added, "Sir?"

"What is it?" Gordon asked.

"Batman wanted me to give you this", Allen said, handing Gordon the envelope that he'd been given earlier.

Gordon took it and just looked at it. When they got back to the GCPD, Gordon found Batman waiting in his office. Batman turned to the Commissioner.

"We have a problem", Batman told him.

"You're telling me", Gordon muttered.

"Erin Knightly needs to be taken off this case. A poem was left in the library and she found it", Batman explained.

"You must mean this. Detective Allen handed it to me ", Gordon replied, taking out the envelope with it's folded piece of paper.

Batman nodded, "Where is Erin?"

Gordon sighed, his shoulders sagged, "I don't know. She took off. My men are out looking for her now. I just hope whoever is behind this doesn't find her first. I don't even know what she has to do with any of this", he added, with a concerned defense, he then added a second after thought, "We do have one person in custody".

"Who?" Batman asked.

"The White Rabbit", Gordon stated, shaking his head.

Batman frowned, "Has he talked yet?"

"All he's said was that he works for the Mad Hatter. Nothing else", Gordon replied.

Batman nodded. The situation was spiraling out of control. The clues were useless and the only person who could possibly help them was M.I.A. at the moment.

Erin reached her apartment building with no further interruptions. It had been a strange night and she didn't want anything else more to do with such things. She hurried her key out of her coat pocket and entered her apartment, shutting the door quickly and locking the door on the door knob and locking the top latch at the top.

She was save. And home sweet home.

Taking a second sigh of relief, she took off her coat and hung it up with her purse. Slipping off her shoes, she went over to the window and looked outside. The street lamps were on. However, a very peculiar someone was sitting at the bottom of the street lamp. She couldn't make out who it was, even though she was pressing her nose against the glass of the window in curiosity. His back was to her and he just seemed rather relaxed there.

For only a minute.

She watched as the figure stood up and disappeared across the street and into the darkened park. Erin wondered who it was.

Very peculiar indeed.
