We're going to get a game system for Christmas, but which one is the best? Xbox? Play Station??

For starters, with younger kids like yours, the Nintendo Gamecube may be a good choice. It has more family friendly type games than that of Xbox or Playstation, like the various Mario titles as well as the popular Zelda (which has a highly anticipated game coming out soon, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess). Those have been some of my favorite games in the past ten years.

I admit, though, that I may be biased with my loyalty to Nintendo. I haven't played a lot of new Xbox or Playstation games but they certainly have great ones of their own, like Xbox's Star Wars Battlefront, Spider-Man, and the whole online aspect. This is a good time to get one of the systems mentioned considering the newer, very expensive consoles coming out lately (Sony's Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii). I haven't been keeping up very well with new games these days, with how costly it all is, so I'm sure plenty more people will have some insight for ya.

I'm with Cale.
Slightly less Biased, I'm a Sony man at heart, But I do have an N64 and a Gamecube, and plan to get a Wii sometime next year. Like he said, on the GC there are games like Mario and Zelda, and also for younger kids there's a wonderful little game called Animal Crossing, which has had everyone I've known who's played it hooked, kids and adults alike. Then aside from Kid's games, there's games like Mortal Kombat Deception and the Resident Evils in case you ever fancy a go.
I wouldn't get an XBox, as the system is pretty much dead now that the XBox 360 is out. And Nintendo and Sony both have the advantage in the next generation, as all your Gamecube games will be playable on the Wii, all your PS1 and PS2 games playable on the PS3, whereas only a handful of XBox games are compatible with the 360.

I thought game cube, but games like Justice League Heroes (I know, shouldn't buy a System around a game) can't be played on the Game Cube.
So I guess PS2 would be the 2nd best? Then again, we all love Mario, *sigh* it's all confusing!!

I would have to slightly disagree, mainly because I have never been a Sony guy. If I was ever anything I guess I was a Sega guy, but I was not that dedicated.

I have played Soul Calibur 2 and Lego Star Wars on both and the PS2 is noticeably slower than the Xbox. That might be in the game programming, but I found it kind of irritating like using my parents computer. If the choice is between the two of them, I would opt for the XBox. Sure the next gen system has come out, but that doesn't diminsh the value of it (well, I guess it does, but just at the cash register).

The PS2 is a full year older than the XBox, and it really should not matter that you can't play all the games from the XBox on the 360, unless you are considering a 360. Which I personally would not at this point. I find tha tit is best to let at least one holiday season pass before buying a new system.

The Game Cube is probably the best of the three though. It is the most balanced between fun kids games and a good selection of adult games. JL Heroes has a chance of coming out on that system because there have been times when things were delayed for release on the GC. I also would not reject a system because of one game.

I'm going to cast my vote for Nintendo as well, though I'm also pretty biased. I was disappointed that JLH wasn't made available for the Gamecube, but that was more than countered by the release of the old-school Mega Man series as 2 collections (one disc has the original MM series, the second has the MMX series). Add in the Mario and Zelda titles, and you have a good family-friendly console that's fun for everyone.

Boy, I didn't quite expect everyone to agree with me on GameCube. I remember three or four years back hearing rumors that the GameCube had been discontinued because it was selling poorly against Xbox and PS2, but Nintendo's obviously still got their head in the game. And it was funny to see the demonstration of the Wii's innovative motion sensor controller only for a Sony representative respond with "We actually had that idea."

One of the biggest annoyances for me has been the more adult themed games not available for GameCube. And I always got the idea that the games couldn't hold as much as those for Xbox or PS2 (while the graphics and gameplay are better, GC's WWE wrestling titles don't have near as many feautures as PS2's). But it also has many great titles unique to its system, and the company seems to innovate in obscure, "cute" kinds of games like that new one where you're a little gizmo going around cleaning a household. That stuff interests me.

I own an Xbox and I would not have it any other way. The PS2 is just fine, but comparing the same game side by side in the stores, Xbox always looked better and played better.

PS2 may have a slightly larger library than Xbox, but it was out long before so that?s expected. There are a few PS2 games I?d like that are not on the Xbox, and vice versa, but not enough to make me go with a PS2.

Xbox 360 is the best one out now, but it?s expensive and not a lot of titles. Not all older Xbox games will play on it without some dirvers installed as the Xbox 360 is all new architecture compared to the original.

Look for the original Xbox to keep going strong for another year until the Xbox 360 drops in price and more titles are out.

I've never played it and I want Guitar Hero for the X Box. Too bad it looks like that won't happen.

I have all three current gen systems, and the Xbox is far and away my favorite. However, Microsoft stopped manufacturing the Xbox when the 360 hit stores, so your only buying options would be a used or refurbished system, unless you chance upon some leftover stock in a retail store. I like Xbox best because of the hard drive. It's so convenient, as I hate dealing with those stupid over priced memory cards. It has more storage space than you'll ever use, and making your own custom soundtracks for compatible games is awesome. If you wanna play Burnout Revenge, for instance, you gotta have it on the Xbox. (Unless you get the 360, which has its own beefed-up version of BR.) As previously stated, it's also faster and has much more power than the other systems. Games look noticeably better and load faster.

Honestly, I rarely play my Gamecube. About the only time it gets used is when me or my neice and nephew wanna play Animal Crossing or Mario Party. The Gamecube's library is much smaller than the Xbox and PS2, which is a shame.

The PS2 is still going to enjoy support for at least another year, with 100 new games coming out. There are a lot of fun, quirky games available for the PS2 that you just can't get on any other system. Stuf like Katamari Damacy and Space Channel 5 special edition are loads of fun. But, the king of all games and the number one reason to justify the existence of the PS2 is GUITAR HERO. Widely recognized as the greatest acheivement in the history of human civilization, Guitar Hero is the most fun you can have without several extremely flexible women present. It may sound dumb until you actually try it, and then you'll wonder how you lived without it.

In conclusion, I would recommend the PS2, even over the Xbox. It has the biggest variety of games, including lots of exclusives. There are plenty of games kids should enjoy, plus lots of stuff like GUITAR HERO for the adults. Xbox has phenomenal games like Morrowind and Halo, but honestly, there's not as big a variety overall. I would probably still recommend the Xbox, if Microsoft was still supporting the system. But as things are, I have to recommend the PS2. I didn't think I would ever recommend that system over the Xbox, but there it is.
