I was talking to Kal-El and Th Riddler in the chat the other day and my kids new school dress code came up. I decided to post it and see what other codes are like. If you are in school, or if you have kids in school, please let me know how you feel about this.

The whole code came from the fact that the school admin wanted to go to uniforms. The parents said, no way, so they adopted this.. which in my opinion, makes uniforms look good.

So.. what do you think:

sounds pretty standard to me. i like it.

established order is needed in schools, even if it's dealing with a minor issue like clothing. kids these days are dressed so strangely; all those emo kids, and goths. that kind of dress shouldn't be encouraged. working adults don't dress themselves that way, so why would these kids delude themselves, and make their lives harder to adjust when they're older?

are we talking like elementary, middle, or high? i think the strangeness happens around high. back then it was hippies, now it's the emos. but elementary and middle...don't kids dress like that anyway?(according to the dress code) it's not really worth having a dress code if everyone follows it without realizing it, it just makes students feel restricted for no reason.

i'm a student myself. am i being too conservative? people tell me i need a live a little. haha, i guess this is the curse of being a crazed batman fan. or a blessing, it can be seen either way.

Certain things.. yes, I agree with. The pants down to your hips, showing off your boxers.. and some other issues.

What ticks me off, they can't where a shirt that says BATMAN, but they can wear one that says NIKE. Kids have to be able to express themselves. And no, most adults don't dress that way, but thats the fun of being a kid. To be able to have the freedom to dress how you feel.

This is for elementary, middle, and high school. Though High school is actually a little more strict, which again, some issues I can see.

Tube tops
• Tank tops
• Halters
• Spaghetti straps
• Bare back or midriff clothing
• Bathing suits

Well. Tank Tops to me aren't bad.. neither are Spaghetti straps.

What about this:
Shirts worn outside the pants are to be below the waist, but above the thighs and size appropriate.

for kids, this is actually hard. My daughter is at that funny size where in order for it to fit her it has to be longer than normal.

I mean.. will these rules really make a child learn better?

Hooded shirts is the one I don't get... I think that the school administrators have heard of "Da Hood" so much they think people with hooded clothing are "gangstas" lol

I think that these people are so stupid they think if they can control how people dress they can control there actions lol This is why I was home schooled.

The thing with hoods and hats/other head coverings at my school was suposidly there was some kind of 'safty issue' with teachers and administrators not being able to see your head...me thinks it was more of a 'sleeping issue'...with hoods at least.
But I find the thing with the shirts that say things compleatly ridiculous.

Well, it all goes back to Columbine. The kids who attacked Columbine were members of a so-called "Trenchcoat Mafia"... Since then I believe school administrations have frowned upon the idea of clothes that can "conceal" and part of you...

Of course this is stupid because EVERY teenager I know wears hooded sweatshirts... It is the look these days and there's no point banning it.

Elementary, some of Middle school, and most of high school dress trashy. They have their pants down to their knees or they have pants built in them, you know what I mean. I like the standard but I hate uniforms.

I rather like the Uniform approach. It keeps everyone equal. There is way too much put on looks and status and having just the right whatever these day. My niece was into the Goth look. She looked really freaky and when we were at the Mall one time I got a kick out the looks other people were giving her.

So I think it’s a good thing because too many parents are lame and they get whatever the kid wants just to keep them quiet, regardless of what it looks like. Kids are just being kids of course, but they need a little structure to keep them in line.

I'm on the other end. Because it doesn't make kids equal. The rich kids will still wear "rich" clothes, and the poor kids will still be poor. I mean, the little girl down the street, my daughter's friend, came down and bragged about her name brand clothes. Well, I'm not to proud to say, we can't afford all the name brands, we buy Wal-Mart.

So kids will still be themselves, it's just the fact that I think our code is to much. I'd rather have a uniform rather than what I posted..

Back when I was in school, they wanted to imput uniforms, but that idea got rejected. We had almost the same kind of dress code, but I still wore comic book t shirts like Batman and no one ever said anything. But our code was that all shirts must be tucked in with a belt. If you didn't have a belt, they'd give you a piece of rope to tie around your waist. But this rule only applies to a certain order, as one day I saw an administrater tell one kid to tuck in his shirt, then turn around to a guy with his shirt hanging out and pants hangin low and tell him good morning. And the guy who he was being nice to turned out to be one of the varsity basketball players. I mean the whole school thing is almost becoming pointless today. Some things that they used to teach, they don't anymore and it's almost more better to just be homeschooled.

There are people who are into Designer Labels and think they have to have that crap to be happy. Me, I’m not a slave to fashion. I tend to find something I like (basic Nike shoes, Dockers, etc ) and stick with it. At work I wear an oxford style shirt with the company name embroidered on it. But on Fridays we can be casual and that’s when I wear one of my Camp Shirts, or Hawaiian Shirts over a T-Shirt with Dockers and my Nike Dart’s (I never buy the expensive Nike’s).

40 years ago when I was in school we had no dress codes, people just knew how to dress properly. Somewhere along the line people pushed the limit too far and Dress Codes had to be set up to keep the morons in line with the rest of us.

You need to understand that some people are just thoughtless and stupid. Take for example. I don’t go to the movies very much because I know morons will NOT turn OFF their Cell Phones. Some of them will actually talk on the phone during the film. When I was at TDK I saw a person with TWO Cells Phones they were holding up and doing something with them as I could see the glow of the screens.

So we have Dress Codes and Uniforms because some people need a little more guidance than some of the rest of us. My kid hates uniforms, but I like them. The save wear and tear on his real clothes and I think it should be a matter of school pride to wear the school colors.

Wait, so your kids' school adopted those guidelines because they wanted uniforms? My high school's guidelines were nearly identical to that and people didn't really complain. It still allows a good variety of clothes, certainly enough to distinguish the "hicks/jocks" from "skaters/stoners." I had never even read the rules in my school notebook until almost finished. I do remember girls whining about the new ban on spaghetti straps though. And some kids wore pajama pants to school which was annoying.

But are you sure they can't wear Batman shirts? From what I read, they just can't wear shirts with foul images and messages. Hell, half of my grade school yearbook photos had me wearing a Batman shirt. My 1995 even had Batman & Robin punching Two-Face & Riddler (Batman Forever). In high school I also had a Marilyn Manson shirt with a somewhat ant-religion message but never got in trouble. That same shirt was a source of controversy at one high school were a boy was suspended for wearing it. That was on the news in 2001 I believe.

I do remember an idiot going into school with his pants down below his butt and boxers fully exposed. I told my friends, "Maybe he took a crap and forgot to pull up afterwards." Hopefully a teacher called him out on it.

ok - not school, but work. I work for a bank at one of their head offices, and for about 5 or 6 years now, non-customer facing staff could wear (within reason) what they liked. About 3 months ago this was scrapped and we're now "smart casual". When the announcement was made that a dress code policy was being re-introduced. We all gathered down one end of the office (about 60 of us), our Dept Exec came in and told us. He mentioned a few things we wouldnt be allowed to wear. One of them was shirts with logos/slogans on. A the time of this, I was actually wearing a Batman T-shirt! I've known him quite a long time (we get on pretty good) and he just looked at me and laughed.
