has anyone read it? it's REALLY good. it's probably the best graphic novel i've ever read. it has a lot of adult themes that's more rated R than PG-13 like other comics are.
cant wait for the movie!
i'm gonna have to say my favorite characters are rorschach and nite-owl. i'm curious to see how mr. manhattan will look in the movie.

it's not like any other comic i've ever read. it's really good though; reminds me little of the JLU episode when the people were getting upset with the heroes having too much power. the comic is like a superhero parody and satire combined in one.

It's a fantastic, wonderful story.
I can't remember what the list was (some highbrow nonsense, probably compiled by a bunch of academics) , but a couple of years ago it made big news as the only comic to ever make the best book awards. I've you've not read it, I would without reservation recommend everyone to do so.
Also, I personally think The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen stories are as good as comics get. I'm in the minority on the following though; I thought the film was very good too (although Moore himself completely rubbished it).
I don't always like him (Moore) very much. He's a combative, troublesome, drama queen, but his writing (in places) is as good as it gets. |

Yeah, Alan Moore is one of the greatest creative minds the comics medium has ever seen, but he is quite eccentric. He seems to hate any sort of comics adaptation, if it strays from the source even a tiny bit.
Watchmen is one of those few books/comics I reread every year. There is such depth in this story, I always notice something new. It's an amazing reading experience, and must be read more than once to truly enjoy and more fully understand it.

So has anyone seen the film yet? I was at the Imax at Waterloo at 3am this morning for it - I thought it was superb.
I was also slightly surprised at how completely faithful to the source material it was (albeit abridged). The only think that struck me is (& I've not read it for some time now) I don't remember it ending exactly as it did in the movie. I'll dig it out tonight.
I see the ever idiotic Alan Moore is up to usual dramatics - Dave Gibbons was named on the opening credits - but (unless I just missed it) Alan Moore's name wasn't there. For all his mesmeric writing he's just a berk at times.
The figures are great too - they come in the old Hush style boxes that DCD dont' seem to do now (bar Ross' Justice figures).
Brilliant film. |

I'm not sure if I want to see it. I was told that it's kinda gory with alot of blood in it. That's just not something I like.
As for Alan Grant, he wasn't on board with the film at all.

Watchmen was awesome! Okay, so it was gory and there were scenes that made me close my eyes because I didn't feel like watching them but other than that, the movie was awesome. Dr. Manhattan is totally HOT! Even though he was naked, that part I didn't mind watching. Watchmen is kind of like looking at the dark side of being a super hero. You are flawed no matter how much you say you are invincible, YOU ARE FLAWED. The movie was really, really great. I enjoyed every second of it.

loved it. saw it twice already! hahaha.
this one's definitely not for the kids. even 17 is pushing it. i've been used to material like this, so i understood all the themes and ideas explored in the movie...but i have a handful of idiot friends who only liked it for the fighting, gore, and sex. haha.
i'm gonna have to read this again...and again and again. haha. i only read it once, and by seeing the movie which doesn't even have everything, i'm sure there are plenty of things i missed. one read definitely isn't enough for watchmen.

LOVED the movie, saw it opening night
I thought it was really awesome
anything they changed from the book was minor changes, the biggest change is in the end, and it wasnt really that big of a difference, I thought.
I still think the book is better though |

After I posted about the actual film, I did some digging (basically I read wiki) and yeah, he's not.
I know everyone goes on and on about Watchmen (and rightly so), but I still actually think League of Extraordinary Gentleman is Moore's best comic - and I can understand why he didnt like the movie adaptation of that. Despite the ritualistic slaughter the movie version of LOEG got (by fans and critics alike), I at least thought it looked great and the characters were well done; but it just didn't ring true to the comic in some ways. That's NOT the case with the Watchmen movie. Even down to the exact script and minor details, in many places it's a 100% faithful to source. Like I said in an earlier post - Moore's just a drama queen.
But all that said, he's given his profits from the movie to Dave Gibbons (artist/co-creator)! That's VERY generous!!
It is gory in select places and it's violent in places too.
Before I went in, I'd heard that the acting was weak in places - anyone that thinks that simply hasn't read the book - all the characters were nailed, 100% accurately. It was a live action comic.

When I watched it, I thought the end was slightly out of kilt with the book, but it's been (I guess) about 3 or 4 years since I've read it, I wasn't sure if it was my memory or the film. Yet strangely, at the same time, right down to the most minor details, I could remember everything else. I need to read it again.
Tales of the Black Freighter out on DVD in a couple of weeks! That'll be good!
Also, the music selection was spectacular! As the closing credits rolled, it was 6am and I'm sitting in front of the biggest cinema screen in the Europe, with a sound system that simply rocked, and you've got Desolation Row by My Chemical Romance blasting at full volume. I'm not a particualrly big fan of MCR, but at that point in my life, trust me, it WORKED! I've just ordered both OST and score CDs from Amazon.
With the exception of the truly bloody obvious, it's the best film I've seen at the cinema for a few years.

From what I've observed, you have to read the graphic novel before watching the movie to really enjoy it. Direct adaptations from one media to another seems to cater to only those who are fans of the series. For those who are not familiar with the material, they'd be lost.
I didn't read the novel and felt I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would. My from what my friends tell me, they changed some things but pretty much maintained the core of the story.
I felt it was too long for a movie. There were moments when I thought it would be over, but it kept going. It wasn't a bad film, just something that I could've liked more if I knew the characters ahead of time.

really? i thought it was adapted well enough that even non-fans could enjoy it. my friends all loved it.
if you ask me, 2 views are recommended; just to understand it a little more. if you miss like one part of a character's dialogue, there's a chance you might miss the whole point of the movie.
and being the bat-fan i am, i saw a little bit of batman in a lot of the characters. some in rorschach, in nite-owl, and in ozymandias.

About the dialogue...there were times I couldn't understand a word Rorshach was saying. It was probably an audio thing but in some moments, I'd be lost.
I definitely saw aspects of Batman in Rorshach and Night Owl. They were both pretty interesting characters. The fight scenes were good and definitely entertaining. Sometimes it was a little too much for me.
I kind of got a Joker feeling from the actor playing Ozymandias. Did anyone else notice it? Maybe it was his purple and black suit.

It was long - that's true - and if someone is undecided on the film, or not thrilled by it, the length of it won't help.

I'd agree with Phil's summary - my girlfriend has never read it (and is never likely to!), and she thought it was really good. She went in with had a basic idea of what it's about (mainly because I told her), but that was it.
It was funny this evening on the radio - they played the audio trailers and the guys on Radio 1 were laughing at how awful they thought it all sounded. It was all very patronising, and then they started talking about "comic fans", saying they weren't happy - but they never actually are etc. I did laugh (equally patronisingly, naturally........) |

i got a joker vibe from the comedian. they both make themselves a parody of what they think is human nature (savage). only one is on the forces of evil, and the other is on the forces of good. they're the kind of people who have no friends though. cuz they're just so wacko. and also, the first silk spectre is like the comedian's harley.
so many parallels, i wonder if it was intentional.

It's true that the ending was different, but for good reason, and it reaches the same conclusion. The book is the book and the movies the movie, I love them both
Also, I agree with the music selection, DEFINATLY picking up the soundtrack
I know a lot of people who hadnt read the book who watched the movie and loved it, so I guess it's more of a "you get it or you don't" |

I was told absolutely nothing about the story or plot. I just went in thinking they looked cool. . I had no idea what to expect.
