I totally agree about AC/DC, Drunken Fist - but haven't a clue what you're on about in the rest of the post!

I never really liked Van Halen at the time, have warmed to some of their stuff since (I really liked Why Can't This Be Love).

Only FOUR MORE DAYS! My copy of the game is paid for, I just have to go pick it up Tuesday. I've been having daily shred sessions in preparation. Couple of weeks ago, I got the GH2 demo, which contains 4 songs. Sadly, the awesome guitar solo that opens Van Halen's "You Really Got Me Now" is not present. That song is still my favorite out of the 4. After perusing the track list for GH2, I'm very irritated that there still isn't any AC/DC. I can't imagine why; you can't have a complete rock-themed game without including AC/DC. I defy anyone to find an AC/DC song that has a bad guitar track; it can't be done!
Aside from that gripe, everything loooks good. I can't wait. My axe is prepped and ready! FOUR MORE DAYS!!

Yeah, I went to my local Game Crazy earlier and only recognized three titles on the test copy; and I found out my left hand's coordination sucks. But I'm still looking forward to it.

They've got Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart, of all the STP titles they chose one of the more obscure ones, I always thought they'd go with Interstate Love Song or Meatplow; but Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart one of my favorite songs of all time.

Yeah, I was glad to see "Trippin'" on the track list. They picked a couple I don't like, though. Out of all the Nirvana songs they could go after, they hafta choose the one I really truly hate (Heart-Shaped Box). And while Skynyrd is a must, I was praying to anyone who would listen that "Simple Man" would be the one. "Freebird" is a classic, no doubt, but "Simple Man" is my favorite of all their songs. It has one of my all-time top five favorite badass guitar tracks. It's still cool to have "freebird" on there; it should be a great test of endurance.
From the early reviews I've seen, it sounds like the game is tougher. I've heard "Misirlou" on expert will make players cry like little girls in frustration. I'm familiar with that track, and I can believe it.

I can't wait to shred "War Pigs." That's one of my most-anticipated songs in the game.

Ok, I've just done a google search and now know what you're talking about it, there are some good songs on there.

Misirlou is a great song! The Stray Cats are one of my favourite ever groups so was pleased to see them there; I also love Reverend Horton.

I agree Heart Shaped Box isn't Nirvana's best, but I don't hate it - that whole album is quite a difficult listen (you've really got to be in the mood for it).

Stop is the one Jane's Addiction song I quite like (I thought they were the most over-rated band going). I've gone off the Foo Fighters a bit, but I really like Monkey Wrench. Dave Grohl is one of the good guys though.

I'm not overly familiar with anything Lynyrd Skynyrd did except Freebird & Sweet Home Alabama (although I really like Drive By Truckers and their double CD tribute to them has always made me want to listen to more of LSs stuff.

How exactly do you play this game? I assume you need to be able to play guitar?

Wonder if this post will come out at the top again.................

Nah, you don't have to have any skill on a real axe to play. The GH controller has five fret buttons on the neck, and a strum bar on the main body of the guitar. Each of the five fret buttons are a different color- green, red, yellow, blue, and orange. When you play a song, the notes scroll toward you, each note in one of the five colors. As each note reaches the bottom of the screen, you press the matching color fret button and press the strum bar. It's that simple. On easy mode, you only use 3 of the fret buttons. On medium difficulty, you use 4, and have to play more notes; on hard, you use all five buttons, and on expert mode you sweat bullets trying to get through some of the songs. One of my friends who plays the guitar in a band says that some of the songs on expert difficulty are tougher than playing them on a real guitar! But that's not an issue, as there's nothing stopping you from playing the songs on a lower difficulty setting and still having a blast. I rarely play on expert mode myself, just when I'm feeling particularly keyed up.
So, learning to play the game is simplicity itself. That's where the game's greatness lies. Pretty much everybody I know has harbored some dream, however small, of rocking out in a band. Most of us never will, for various reasons. This gives us a chance to feel that same rush without spending all the time and work learning to play a real guitar. It's tough to describe really, but once you start playing you won't want to stop. If nothing else, you shouldn't have much trouble finding a store near you that has a demo of the game set up where you can try it out. I was in Best Buy a couple of days ago, and played a few more of the tracks (they had ten playable songs on their demo disk). If you're worried about trying to play it for the first time in a public place, don't. Most everybody I've seen playing it at the store displays have been missing notes left and right as they learned to play, and they were still having a blast. It's a rare game that's fun even when you screw up!

Just 10 more hours separate me from my destiny. FEAR MY ROCK PROWESS!!! :p

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't had such a dream!

I've never got into the whole game thing (as least not since I had an Atari as a kid). Part of it has always been I spend so much on CDs, books, comics & DVDs that I just couldnt afford another medium of entertainment.

I've seen the games consoles you can play in shops (places like HMV and Virgin Megastores), but they always seem to be surrounded by kids, so I've never really tried. I do get curious, but never enough to stand around waiting for however long it takes to have a go (and yeah, you're right DF, probably then being embarrassed for looking stupid by not having a clue what I'm supposed to be doing).

All that Warhammer stuff has also always had me kinda curious - never had a clue how to play it, but it looks interesting enough.

Oddly enough, I never got all that interested in video games until I was an adult. Probably because we just couldn't afford all that when I was a kid. I did wind up with both an NES and a Super NES, but I got each system for Christmas after they'd been around for years, and only had like 4 games for each system. About the only games I was good at were things like Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat.
The thing that got me intereste in game is when I was 18, and Goldeneye 007 came out for the N64. I played it at a friend's house, with 4 of us doing deathmatches, and that hooked me. I still don't spend a whole lot of time and money on games, but there are a few that I really like. Guitar Hero is one of 'em. Smile

I swung by Gamestop at 10:00 this morning, got there just as the guy was unlocking the door. Played it about an hour, and I'm now about halfway through on Medium. Five stars on everything so far! I haven't bought anything in the unlock shop yet, as I'm planning to wait until after I've beaten the game on medium first. I also really like the revamped career mode, it's much better than in the first game. The vocal performances aren't as great as in the first game, where they were nearly perfect on every song. There are several songs in GH2 where it's very obvious that someone else is doing the vocals. Music is awesome as ever though, near-perfect recreations of the original recordings. Favorites so far are Van Halen's "You Really Got Me Now" and Danzig's "Mother," the one song from my wish list that is in the game. Well, enough chat. I'm off to shred some more.

Yeah I noticed that the guy they got for "Trippin'" didn't have a Weiland like voice, and he was singing to slow.

About being fun; when I tried it (I haven't purchased it... Yet) I butchered the songs I played but had a hell of a good time, but you could attribute that to the Dr. Pepper I'd just slammed.

And video games are pretty much what I do with my life, I have two SNES, an N64, a Gamecube, a Gameboy Color, a Gameboy Advance, a Gamboy Advance SP, a DS, a Playstation, a PS2, and I'm savin' me pennies for a Wii.

I finished the game on medium at about 2:30 today, or I suppose it's yesterday, now. Got five stars on every song on the first try, with the exception of that Suicidal tendencies song. Only got 4 on it. It's weird how this game gets you all pumped up. I had all the lights out, and the surround sound cranked up so loud people could hear it at the end of the street. When I was playing Freebird, I felt like I was fulfilling my by-God destiny! big grin The segue into Freebird is hilarious, by the way. A screen pops up: "They're chanting "Freebird!" You always knew this day would come!" After that, about 5 menu screens pop up in succession asking you if you're totally sure that you REALLY want to play Freebird, as only a true hero can pull it off! I'm just glad I could rise to the occasion; I got a five star rating, and only missed one note. I have to work the next 2 days, but I'll start on hard this weekend.
They'll have a tough time coming up with another big finisher song for GH3. I suggest the bowel-shattering AC/DC classic "For Those About to Rock." It's the only show-closer I can think of that can actually rival "Freebird."

Hahah! I love just sitting here reading your glorification of this game. I've yet to try it, but does sound fun, almost like Dance, Dance Revolution (which I've also never played). At this point, I'm waiting for the next THQ wrestling game to come out for a Nintendo system and considering getting the new Zelda title for GameCube.

So are all the songs in Guitar Hero re-recorded and not the originals? If they have the rights to them, I don't see why they couldn't use the original studio recordings.

Well, getting the rights to use the music is a different thing that getting the rights to use the original recording. Original recording costs more. It doesn't really bother me, since the game isn't about the player being in Skynyrd or Black Sabbath or whoever, but being in a band that does badass covers. There are two songs in this game, though, that do use the original recordings: Primus and Jane's Addiction both contributed their originals.
I just wish to God they had used the original recording for Freebird. That guy sounds terrible, nothing like Van Zant. It's like he's trying to imitate a stereotypical southern accent, but without singing worth a damn.

Blimey Razhwurz, how do you have time to be such a prolific (and occasionally eloquent!) poster on BatmanYTB.Com?

Yeah, For Those About To Rock remains the showstopper to stop showstoppers! I'm gonna sound old now - Castle Donnington, 1984. They had totally ripped the place up (Dave Lee Roth had boasted before the show that Van Halen we're going to steal it - trust me - they didn't) and as if everything that went before that wasn't enough............. you've got Brian Johnstone screaming "FTATR - We Salute You", Angus on his knees, then rolling around on the stage still playing, Cannon's BLASTING - it was spectacular! I saw them a few times after that too, and 10 years and 3 or 4 albums later they still ended with cannons (updated a few times, but cannons nonetheless). Probably still do!

I've just had a look at Amazon to see how much this game is, it's ?30 for just the game, or if you fancy a Guitar to play it on it's ?45. I'll see if my brother knows anyone who might get it before I splash out. Thats probably why I don't do Games and stuff. ?30 is (roughly) 3 or 4 CDs, 3 DVDs, 15 comics or 3 TPBs!

Incidentally (and totally off subject) Drunken Fist - I know from your posts you're a big Grant Morrison fan - have you read his run on New X-Men? If so, d'you rate it?

I take breaks, occasionally I go online to check out up-coming video-games and visit here while I'm at it; and sometimes my Comic nerdom becomes so over-powering that no video game can quell my boredom, so I go here.

And what do you mean occasionally?!

Caleson Wrote: [I'm] considering getting the new Zelda title for GameCube.

Bad news, the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess has dissapeared off certain store scheduals, so you might have to buy it for the Wii; which isn't really that bad as you're already considering buying a Wii and it's games cost around 50$ (Same as Gamecube's).

Well I've got Guitar Hero 2, but since someone else actually bought it they've been playing it all day and I've not even got to touch the controller since last night.

As a testament to how effect my 4 years with the Batesville High School Band was (in the drum section no less), I really really suck at this game. For the first time ever there was a big opening at Best Buy on the demo unit, and having never played GH 1 or 2, I thought I would give it a shot. I think that I got one thing right. I figured that I had heard sharp dressed man enough to be able to play it on easy, but not so good.

Do I just have no sense of rhythm anymore or did you guys have a bit of a learning curve when you first played with the guitar controller?

Does anybody know why there is not an XBox version of this game? I can't play guitar, although I did own one once and started taking lessons. I know I would love this game, but I'm not buying a PS2 just to play it.

It's not coming out on X-Box because it is coming out on the X-Box 360.

They were still using them as late as the early '90s. I have a concert DVD of them, and they still had the cannons. It would be awesome to actually go to and AC/DC show; it's too bad they don't tour any more. The only bad I would want to see even more is the Beatles, and we know that ain't gonna happen.

Video games are waaaaay too expensive. If there's a game I want, I generally wait until the price drops below $20 before I get it. GH2 is just one of those extremely rare cases where I just couldn't stand the wait. Even with game consoles, I wait until it's been out a few years and the price is down to around $100 before I get one. I just got a PS2 in March, when it dropped to $129. I still don't buy many games, and I usually get a lot of mileage out of the ones I do buy.

real-dark-knight wrote:Incidentally (and totally off subject) Drunken Fist - I know from your posts you're a big Grant Morrison fan - have you read his run on New X-Men? If so, d'you rate it?

Let me preface my response by saying this: I hate X-Men comics. Hate 'em. There have been some good ones I've read, but by and large, they represent nearly all the things that I feel were so bad with many comics being chruned out during the '90s. I think some of the X-Men characters are cool, but I just despise most of the stories that feature them.
I've only read vol. 1 of Morrison's New X-Men, and it was pretty good. I didn't know who some of the characters were, but that didn't interfere with my ability to follow the story. I've heard that, like much of Morrison's stuff, it only gets better from there. I want to read the rest, but just haven't gotten around to picking up the other trades.

I've never seen anybody play GH for the first time without screwing up a lot. I took to it pretty easily, but there was still a learning curve. There's a tutorial in the game that shows you the basics, and gets you really ready to play. If you just pick it up and try, you'll have a lot more trouble. Once you've spent the few minutes with the tutorial, you'll be all set to shred. Smile
