That's why I don't buy these. Its nice for these two characters to get noticed but at the same time you see people that shouldn't have ranked before or after them, and there missing some people like Wonder Woman. She's as important to Superman & Batman to women everywhere. Where is she?

Yeah, this list is an incredibly stupid and irregular list. The top 10 goes:
1. The Marlboro Man
2. Big Brother
3. King Arthur
4. Santa Claus
5. Hamlet
6. Dr. Frankenstein's Monster
7. Siegfried
8. Sherlock Holmes
9. Romeo and Juliet
10. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Maybe I've just not been around long enough, but the only things I know of that Marlboro Man has influenced are a couple cancer patients and some filthy smelling cars. Batman and Superman's underrated spot shouldn't have even been acknowledged on this forum. Whoever came up with that list needs a kick in the teeth...

Yeah, I'm not agreeing with their choices either. I've got to think that Robin Hood (#12) has had more impact on culture in general than the Marlboro Man. |

I hate to be obcene, but who the f*** is Siegfried, and how did he make it to #7? How can anyone make that list without Indiana Jones? Screw these dudes, here's my top five influencial fictional characters.
1. Batman: Through out my entire life there were two things I absolutley loved, Root Beer and Batman.
2. Spider-man: In my mind the definitive Superhero.
3. Luke Skywalker: As a child I loved the idea that a young man from a mundane lifestyle could become the greatest hero in the universe; and face it, if I hadn't learned morals from Star Wars I'd probably be in prison right now.
4. Wolverine: Taught me that a badass with 6" adamanium claws is just as cool as he sounds.
5. Link: The main hero in The Legend of Zelda video game franchise, whenever I play a Zelda game I feel like Link is an avatar for my more courageus side.

I haven't heard of him either. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and of the five listed there that would have been my last guess. I would have leaned more toward the Swan Lake or Get Smart characters.

Prior to the Marlboro Man, men did not smoke filtered cigarettes, women did. The Marlboro Man ads changed that and sales soared. I don't smoke, this was what I heard discussed on the radio about it.

True, but I don't think that's a strong enough reason to make him #1. Joe Camel's impact on smoking and advertising in general have been pretty significant, certainly on par with the smoking cowboy. It seems like the whole world was focused on Joe a few years ago, talking about everything from his influence on underage smokers to hidden pictures within the logos.
To re-use my earlier example, how many stories over the last 500+ years have been influenced by the tale of the one who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor? Pretty much everything from medieval ballads to an episode of Firefly. I remember reading somewhere (sorry, I can'rt remember where) that the tale of Robin Hood has had more retellings than any other story in history. |

The only Siegfried who means anything to me is Siegfried Schtauffen from the Soul Calibur games, and even he's not that popular.
And I don't mean to diss Batman on his own forum, but how could he beat Superman? I mean Batman's a great superhero, but he's not all that influencial. The three superheroes I'd choose that effected the superhero industry would be Superman, The Thing and Spider-man.
Superman was the first superhero, if it wasn't for him we'd probably be playing Bingo or Dungeons And Dragons instead of sitting here disscusing Batman; and closing in on a century later he's still the architypal superhero.
The Thing was one of the first mainstream superheroes to actually regret his powers, bringing more humanity to the character. And after the creation of the Fantastic Four superheroes began to evolve.
Spider-man finished what began with The Fantastic Four, he was the first superhero to be portrayed in a human manor; he mad mistakes, he had regrets, and he learned values and morals he didn't have at the beginig of the story.
As much of a compelling character The Dark Knight is, he didn't really revolutionize any thing.

oh c'mon man...batman definetely revolutionized. he was an orphan with good goals. instead of going all crazy, he decides to protect the innocent, rather than to attack the messed up, evil people. and the idea that batman doesnt kill is awesome too. batman is an amazing character. but then again, this might just be how i depict him, or that this stuff only applies to me. lol.

Quite true. There are so many different stories and myths around Robin Hood! There isn't a single, correct version. I remember recently someone (some professor from some university - supposedly not some crackpot with an itch) actually claimed that Robin Hood was quite real (which is a serious debate anyway), but that he never set foot in Nottingham and was born and bred in Wales!
We've got a high profile, new telling of the story on TV here at the moment, which I think isn?t bad (apart from the fact I didn't know they had Max Factor and Revlon in circa 1300). In terms of viewing figures though it's becoming a bit of a flop (and it's in the Dr Who slot - so it's on a hiding to nothing anyway).
& I liked Firefly - but I always thought of it as more intergalactic wild west than intergalactic ye olde England. It's good regardless though (and I really fancy the dippy mechanic).
The 80s version of Robin Hood (Robin Of Sherwood) with the mystical, sorcery slant was a great program - I loved that when it was on (and think it's totally stood the test of time).
I think you can definitely add Batman to that list Razhwurz - if anything, I'd replace The Thing with him (I like him, don't get me wrong, but I don't think he stands up to worldwide recognition in the way that Superman, Batman or Spidey does).

Orphan: An imensly popular plot point, the hero having lost his parents.
Putting all these features together makes a unique and interesting character, but Batman has had very small influence on other stories, especially comparing him to Superman and Spider-man; the former created the industry and provided a prototype for all heroes to come (Including Batman) and the latter inventing the idea of a Superhero being aproached as a human being (if it weren't for Spidey, Batman would still be calling Robin his old chum and sliding down poles.)

if it's originality ur talking about...then superman isn't revolutionary either. superman basically took after hercules. greek mythology is OLD. but i might have misinterpreted ur post.
and did spidey REALLY make batman more human? i think it was just time itself. the only reason why batman was calling robin his old chum and sliding down poles was because they had to make things kid friendly and less violent to get rid of the war(WWII) out of the kids' heads. but as time progressed, batman became who he was supposed to be in the first place. did u not know that batman was a dark character to begin with?
