The Dreamcast has bucket loads of fun games - both single and multi-player. However, don't just take my word for it, have a look at them for yourself...

Note: Quotes are taken from customer reviews on Amazon and quotes from Wikipedia.

SEGA Dreamcast

History of Dreamcast Part 1
History of Dreamcast Part 2

First regardless of the future this has been the best console i have ever owned and i am now looking forward to a catalogue of triple A bargain titles some of which beat anything on the PS2 portfolio. Some of the games such as SHENMUE ,CRAZY TAXI,RESI EVIL have been brilliant and its demise is a result of brand name over content. The fact that the PSone is outselling the Dreamcast is testament to the lack of knowledge the average shopper has if they are buying a new machine to play six year old titles and sequels. If you enjoy gaming this console is a gem, forget PS2 and this machine will match it while you wait for truly next generation hardware to appear. As i say i have no regrets about this purchase and it has and will continue to be a cutting edge gaming gem.If you like lukewarm sequels and lazy movie tie-ins i would recomend PS2 anyday.Just coz McDonalds is the most popular doesnt make it the best food ?? Thanks for trying SEGA its been a hoot !!!

ChuChu Rocket!

Gameplay Video

All you have to do is herd your ChuChus (space mice) into their rocket before the KapuKapu (scary space cats) catch up to them. The game may seem simple, but don't be fooled. Your brain will shift into warp speed amid the fast and furious chasing, mind-bending puzzles, multiplayer teamwork, and your opponents' sneaky tricks. Catch the mystery mice and a timed event throws everyone's strategy out of whack. Whether you play solo, or play the nation, you'll get infected by ChuChu fever.

Confidential Mission

Trailer
Gameplay Video

The missions are tough with plenty of variety plus some hidden extras. Ever wanted to be James Bond? Believe me, this is as close as it can get. (Make sure when you get the automatic Assault Rifle, you fire it sideways Miami Vice style for ultimate immersion!!) Training mode will have you cursing with frustration, but I guarantee you won't be able to stop going back.

Crazy Taxi

Gameplay Video

Crazy taxi is a game that makes the dreamcast worth buying. A superb game that should be owned by everyone. If you like games like Driver or Toca then this mindless driving game will appeal to you.

The game is not just mindless it has a detailed arcade and original modes. You can ride with four taxi drivers in two cities. With great background music from the offspring and detailed graphics this will be a game that will live in the memory.

D2

Trailer
Opening Scene

D2 received mixed reactions from gamers in Japan and North America. Some appreciated and praised the game's storytelling and attention to the characters' backstories and emotions. Others criticized that the game's atmosphere and plot was lengthy and boring compared to other titles such as Resident Evil. The game was also criticized because of its poor localization and dialogue. Despite some gamers proclaiming D2 as a conceptual masterpiece and one of the best horror titles available on the Dreamcast, the poor performance of D2 in North America and Japan prevented the release of the game in Europe.

Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future

Opening Scene
Gameplay Video

This is a gorgeous, very playable title which occasionally suffers from a lack of direction but that shows off the power of the Dreamcast as well as any game I've seen. The lack of guns, explosions and cars might be an instant turn-off for some of you but I'd urge anyone who's even the slightest bit bored of all those driving, shooting and fighting games to give Ecco a try. The PlayStation has Crash Bandicoot, Nintendo has Mario... and now that the Dreamcast has Ecco, forget Sonic!

The gameplay is a mixture of action and puzzle solving and you'll need to be a bit handy at both if you're to succeed. My only real criticism of this is that it gets tricky quite quickly - if I hadn't been enjoying the scenery and the aimless swimming so much I think I might have given up after only a few hours' play. The hints and tips given to you by other creatures are often too cryptic to make sense of, and more frustrating still is the fact that you occasionally won't realise there's a puzzle to solve until it's too late. You're either running out of oxygen or getting eaten alive by a shoal of something nasty without any warning that danger was imminent. Effectively, you have to die to realise what needs to be done for next time - sure, you've got infinite continues, but returning to the continue screen ruins the harmony of what is generally a deeply engrossing game.

Headhunter

Trailer

Eat your heart out metal gear solid fans, this is the game that proves there's life in the old grey box yet - with stunning viuals fantastic gameplay which are matched only by the games suspence and plot - helped by a fantastic music score which amuze (game devlopers) have obviously put alot of thought into, which helps make this game into a cinematic master piece. The game also has excellent replay value as you there is the option to re-play training missions. And to top it all off Amuze have managed to fit in an excellent motorcycle game as well, which could stand as game in itself. this is a must own game for any true dc fan.

House of the Dead 2

Trailer
Gameplay

i am a avid sega fan, so have owned almost every sega console that got released in the UK. one of my all time highlights was first playing the amazing Virtua cop on my saturn, with a light gun. i love light gun games, and i think every console deserves a great light gun game. house of the dead 2 (hotd2) is no exception. this game is amazing. you NEED the light gun for this game, and if your mates come round and see ya wasting zombies with a light gun in this game-they'll all want to play it. sega have a great history of light gun games, and this one really does not dissapoint. the lightguns are pricey, and hard to get hold of-so try and buy the hotd2 and gun package. i have 2 lightguns, and if theres no1 else to play it with me-its great fun using both guns at once-i suggest any person with a dc should buy this. definatly one of the dc's highlights.

Jet Set Radio

Gameplay Video

Sega does it again. I'm not sure how many more first class titles my bank balance can handle. Ferrari 355 Challenge, Metropolis Street Racer, Half Life and Shenmue to look forward to next week and Quake III, Unreal Tournament and Black & White on the horizon. Jet Set Radio is funny, original, has excellent graphics like nothing you've ever seen and incredible music, the quality of which easily surpasses anything else I ever heard in a video game. As with many of the new Dreamcast games, novice gamers may find the challenge set quite high, but after the first couple of levels, the gameplay suddenly clicks and you'll be pulling all the stunts you see in the game's intro before you know what's what. This game reminds me of the good old days of first class Sega games and marks a return to form for their in-house coding teams, who always were the best at producing risky, 'off-the-wall' titles. You'll never see anything like this on the PS2 - just a load of dumbed down, 'safe' sequels. Good job I cancelled my PS2 order in time, then.

Metropolis Street Racer

Trailer

More than TOCA , more than McRae , more than even ( whisper it ) Gran Tourismo , there has been one driving game that kept me coming back for more . That game is MSR . The graphical depiction of real-life cities , with accurate mapping . The fact that depending on what time you play the game , it could be a foggy morning in San Francisco , a humid evening in Tokyo , or a wet afternoon in London . The addictive qualities of the Kudos system - where a target for a race could be met not only by your position in a race , but the style in which you drove it . The betting system - the lower a target you set yourself , the higher the Kudos you won if you were successful . A complete race game . Buy it ! If you can't get it , buy it's big brother Gotham Street Racing 2 on Xbox - more of the same , only more .

Phantasy Star Online

Trailer

Where to star with this game? Well as you can guess this game is primarily an online title, but don't let that put you off, because there are also many single player challenges that can be played offline. However, this game comes into it's own when you play it online with people who can be either just round the corner, or thousands of miles away, because you can play this game with anyone from around the world due o the ingenious game sytem which translates what you say into one of many different languages, so that someone in Japan can understand you speaking English and you can understand Japanese. Basically you go online, find four people who want to do the same quest as you and then through co-operation and teamwork you fight your way through the quest. But it isn't just all hacking and slashing, you must utilize everyone or you will not be able to complete your quest as this games relies heavily on teamwork. All in All this is the best game I have ever played.

Power Stone

Gameplay Video

Power Stone is a game which offers a lot of fun. Many different characters with the most amazing cool moves helps this game to be so much fun. The nine different levels are very detailed and offer a huge variety of weapons. There are all sorts of weapons from Petrol Bombs and Flamethrowers to just an old box lying around. The two player mode is brillant to play with your friends were you can battle it out in in which it's best out of three wins. In the arcade version collect many different types of items and weapons and use them in two player. One of Power Stones' best feature is when you collect three power stones, which appear during the fight, you transform into a your super mode which means you can preform some of the most best looking and cool moves you've ever seen!

Quake III: Arena

Trailer

This game is truely amazing. As long as you have 2 or 3 other people around and enough controllers you'll be stunned at what this game can do. I've lost many an hour to this game when I should have been working. Quake 3 has probably destroyed my first year at Uni, but it was worth it!

Ready2Rumble Boxing

Gameplay Video

This has to be one of the most playable boxing games on the market. While Knockout Kings is more relastic, its gameplay is not easy to accquire. However, after a couple of fights in R2R you have the basics and the fun really starts.

Train your fighter from Bronze to Gold and see how he fares. Different fighters have probelms with certain styles so you may end up finishing the game having used 2 boxers.

Brillant game play and graphics but lacks the realism of Knockout Kings

San Francisco Rush 2049

Gameplay Video

San Francisco Rush contains ramps, loops, and cars with the capability of doing rocket like speeds aswell as doing stunts and the ability to fly. Sure there are better racing games for the dreamcast eg. Metropolis Street Racer however this game comes into it's own with the awesome multiplayer modes. Also to keep you happy in single player you can download new competitors from the net.

Shenmue

Trailer
Opening Scene
Gameplay Video

This game has got to be the best game I have ever played on and most likely will ever play on. I got a dreamcast for christmas 2001 and my mum got me this game with it at first I was disapointed as I wanted this car game and was even on about traiding it in for another, really I am so glad I did't. I can't really put into words how fantastic this game really is, it is absolutly supurb, the sound quality is great there are great fighting scenes and the story behind it is excellent. It is all about a teenage boy called Ryo who has to seek vengance for his fathers death and has to go through a whole load of twists and turns before he can find about the truth behind it all. The person responsible for his fathers death is a man called Landee who Ryo has to find and has to go through a whole load of crap before he can get to him. But beware Landee is the head of the chinease mafia who has unbelievlibly good fighting skills that Ryo has never seen before. Who ever takes on this game has got the ride of there life. I am still playing on it today 2006 and have completed shenmue 1 and 2 several times. I don't know when to give it up, who ever buys this game is going to be completely ovetwelmed and involved in it and they will be they will be hooked on it forever like me. I seriously recommend this game as it is what dreams are made of it is absolutely astonishing.

Shenmue II

Trailer

Without a doubt Shenmue 2 is the best game out this year and probably the last 4 years. Ive played the Japanesse version of Shenmue 2 and I absolutley loved it. I may have used a walkthrough but thats because I cant read or speak japanesse but even at this disadvantage I still loved it.
People who have played the first game will know pretty much about the storyline and what to expect from the sequel. Shenmue 2 is much more longer than the first and with more QTE, Freestyle Fights and loads more characters. With a action packed storyline with the greatest looking graphics ever seen on a home console Shenmue 2 is the ULTIMATE GAME.

You also get chance to play some of the SEGA classics like OUTRUN, HANG-ON,SPACE HARRIER, AFTER BURNNER and a few none sega games like Darts, QTE Boxing.

The only down point to the PAL version is that it will have Japanesse voices and english subtitles. The Reason for this is that Yu Suzuki thinks it makes the game more Japanesse movie like.

But even with this set back Shenmue 2 will still be 1 of the greatest games ever made.

Skies of Arcadia

Trailer

I had been waiting for this game for ages, and got it on the day of release, and I was definitely not disappointed. Basically there are very few complaints that I can make about this game. The only ones are that there are far too many random battles when you fly around in your ship, and that although this game has some of the most gourgeous graphics seen on an RPG, in some places they are very bare with extremely repetitive textures, and in some places the colours look a bit nasty together. The rest of the game is stunning though; the plot is brilliant, the gameplay and progression are spot on, and it is very addictive. After the first 2 days I clocked up 14 hours! Overall, if you are a fan of the Final Fantasy games (particularly 7 and 9) then I fully recommend this game, as it plays similarly to them. Worth buying a Dreamcast for

Sonic Adventure

Trailer

sonic adventure was probably the best game on Dreamcast & some people still think so,Stepping into the shoes of a hegehog remodled into 3D,you begin your adventure to recover the 7 chaos Emeralds. I became a fan of this game just after they stopped selling Dreamcast products altogether but managed to buy a Dreamcast & copy of the game. The graphics & deatail aren't the heights of say golden sun but overlap PS1's like hellfire! The tunes are fantastic & I'd love to meet the guy who plays the electric gutar like that! The Gameplay is fun & The adventure fields are big but the action stages are like you find in a sci-fi movie with the effects & all! You can choose beetween 6 different characters in which you must unlock. They are Tails,Knuckles,Amy,Big,E-102 & of course Sonic in Which you can be at the start. Theres also super sonic but to be him you've got to beat the game with all the characters first. The objective of the game is to stop Robotniks creation "Chaos" from absorbing all seven Emeralds power & destroying the world. The rate your going to completing the game depends how good you are at gaming. For example My life is basically revolved around Video-games & took me 3 days to complete it,Whereas my friend who usually watches Tv took 3 years to complete it & is still at it!Buy this game now! If you can't get the Dreamcast version get it on Gamecube,Though I havent seen what that versions like though I think it's practically the same except they've called it Sonic adventure DX. YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!

SoulCalibur

Gameplay Video

Soul Calibur is unquestionably the daddy of all 3D beat-em-ups ; it cacks all over the likes of Tekken Tag Tournament from truly stratospheric heights . Only Yu Suzuki's Virtua Fighter comes close to touching it . The first thing you'll notice is the visuals - incredible explosions of light and sparks from clashing blades , utterly lifelike character modelling and animation , an intelligent free-roaming camera , and photorealistic battle arenas featuring falling snow and little eddies of polygonal leaves . Your eyes will bleed . The gameplay follows suit - a host of modes to suit either single-player or multiplayer provide well over the norm in terms of lastability for this genre . Some of the more difficult challenges can take days to complete , but the reward system encourages persistence , with shed-loads of hidden arenas , characters , play-modes , gallery-pictures and other stuff to unlock . The learning curve is nigh-on perfect . And combos - probably thousands , but certainly enough to , errrrrrrrr , fill an extremely large combo-container thingy . And by the way , playing this game on a gamepad is a travesty , go out and invest in an arcadestick and play it as it was intended to be played . You can even decorate it with cigarette burns for added arcade ambience , if you want . Nutshell - Soul Calibur kills all known Tekkens dead , in an instant . Dreamcast's finest hour .

Virtua Fighter 3TB

Gameplay Video

Virtua Fighter 3tb is a pretty good beat 'em up, and also has plenty of comic value, ranging from the stupid comments of jacky to the limp wrists of lion, although the key to comedy does lie in two players mode. Good points include: team battle mode where you can play as 3 different characters, so the true fighter will have to master all characters special moves, unless you use the little sister technique of pushing all the buttons at the same time. The graphics are good, but not too special. What i really like are the backgrounds, pretty cool. With moves that are easy to master and challenging opponents you can bet you will have at least a few hours of fun.

I've had a Dreamcast for several years now. I can't really recommend the Sega controller, but I've got a pretty nice Mad Catz one that is much more comfortable. Soul Calibur is one of my favorite games. I have spent countless hours playing it. That is pretty much reason enough for the system.

It's pretty much THE console for indie developers too, as it still has a strong, loyal fanbase (<one of the most overused phrases on the internet, but what the hell?) Anyway, yeah.. the DC's a doddle to develop for, apparently, so if there are any aspiring game developers on here, I'd recommend you set your sights on purchasing SEGA's Microsoft-powered diamond in the rough.

Plus, it's worth buying for the sake of Shenmue anyway.
