I kind of like that Metallo. Are these going to be the same size as the rest of the movie figures? |

Really? That's funny, I always preferred his "endoskeleton" look. Same deal with Brainiac. |

I saw Lex and Metallo tonight, I didn't have the extra money, but I like em. The Lex is SO much better than the other two.

Beyond is right about the money part, but they're probably supposed to tie in with the video game, which included such additional characters. They look a little plain in the face judging by those catalog photo, but I think they'll end up looking nice and certainly spruce up the lousy Superman Returns line. I might get both new characters and stop there, if they aren't overly expensive. Lex's armor suit is a little overdone.

God, that Metallo is lousy. Luthor is better than the awful movie figures, but still not good. The only one I like is Mongul. It's not on par with the comic-style Dc Superheroes figures, but it looks like he would fit in well with the last couple of series of the classic Masters of the Universe figures. He just has that look to him. I may pick him up, but I'll leave those other two on the pegs with the rest of the Superman Returns crap.

I think the Superman Returns stuff has been absolute rubbish.
It's obviously big box office and the spin-off toys have been considerable in number - but despite the large choice, I've not picked a SINGLE thing.
Very very disappointing all round if you ask me. |

Yeah, you'd think Mattel might learn how to better handle such a big movie-based line after the lackluster reception of the "Batman Begins" line last year. When they have such talented sculptors as the Four Horsemen-- the absolute best in the business, as far as I'm concerned-- working for them, there's really no excuse for such sub-par sculpts on anything. And after endless variants have caused the failure of multiple lines over the past couple of decades, I think that;s pretty clear evidence that it's not what people want. But it all boils down to one simple truth; I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll have cause to say it again: MATTEL NEVER LEARNS. Even when it looks like they're turning things around, like when the DC Superheroes line is announced, the same old problems eventually show their ugly faces once again at some point. The DCSH sounded like a godsend, but once again, it's been marred by some bad case assortments and spotty distribution. The cases sell out almost immediately here, so it's clear the line could be a big hit, but Mattel just can't seem to ever get certain bad habits out its system. The Superman Returns line was just one more example of a line with lots of potential that was hobbled by the same poor handling we've seen dozens of times.

I think DC as a whole sucks. THey have some of the best properties, but do nothing with them. Marvel has better toys, and they put out more movies, perhaps they aren't the best, but they are out there.

Not only Marvel Beyond, but another example of where DC get left standing, there's a complete set of Star Wars figures on Ebay at the moment - for a mere $19,570 you can own all figures from all ranges; Now thats a monstrous amount of money for toys (although in fairness it's a 700 piece collection), but can you ever imagine a Superman Returns piece becoming valuable?
You really would think that the people who commission, produce and then market these toys would try and ask that question! "Will this be held in high esteem in years to come? Will collectors covet this item at auctions?" Then as if the products they regularly produce aren't great, distribution is just random (at best).
It's clearly possible to have a great DC collection (just look at those pictures we recently saw of Flabat's stuff - loads of wonderful figures), but it must be painful to accumulate. You'd think a character/universe that is essentially based on a drawing would be MADE for toys. In many cases, where killer opportunities exist (little films such as Superman Returns for example), the collections are a total letdown.

the figures are based on the game based on the movie that added metallo, bizzaro and mongul. so blame EA games, not mattel. besides, i see ball joints!

I'll probably get some of these new figures, but to be honest, other than the two S3 Select Sculpt figures, I have yet to buy a single basic Superman Returns figure. It feels really strange, but as you've all said, the line was surprisingly bad - substantially worst than Batman Begins. The Superman body designs have disproportionate muscles and a somewhat poor facial likeness. And many of the action features of the variation figures are just lousy.
And the prices are bad as well. The great looking S3 figures have been marked down to $7, while the much smaller, basic scale figures are still frozen at $6.98. I don't understand it at all. I guess I'm gonna use that "Buy 2 figures get $3 off" coupon from a case of Mountain Dew on a Lex Luthor and basic Superman before it expires on January 1st. Then they'll cost roughly what they should have been marked in the first place.
