the figures are based on the game based on the movie that added metallo, bizzaro and mongul. so blame EA games, not mattel. besides, i see ball joints! And from this view, I can clearly see yer nuts. :|

God, that Metallo is lousy.
Having now grabbed one, I can say you're more right than you knew. Some of the highlights:
- My wife & I marvelled at the way that the joints and overall plastic felt exactly like a KO figure I got at the dollar store a few weeks ago
- He can't hold his own gun properly (it swings to the outside or belts him in the face thanks to a round handle and no locators)
- The missile doesn't actually fit inside the gun: about half of it hangs out the front of the barrel
- His feet are hollow (no particular reason; I think Mattel didn't want to spring for the extra plastic to fill them in)
- His lower arms lack any articulation, and appear to be molded to make him look like he is about to make a rude gesture
There's hope for him yet, though...after a trip past the work bench and through the paint booth, I think he'll look halfway decent. I don't think I'll call him "Metallo"...he looks more like "RoboApe" (maybe one of Grodd's inventions? Yeah, that works)

Yep, Mattel is notorious for cutting corners. Why they feel the need to do it with such an important license is mind-boggling. I guess they figure the popularity of the Superman character guarantees a sale. :| The missile issue is probably due to reuse; I'm almost certain I've seen that missile before on another figure. I've gotten stuff from Mattel before that had the same problem, due to reusing a missile of imcompatible size. The hollow feet are a new one, though. Are they actually open at the bottom? If so, this horribly chintzy move is a new low for Mattel!

Yes, that was a literal description of the feet:

You can also sort of see in the picture how awkward the arms look. I would have had him sitting up more, but you're looking at the limit of his hip articulation. Notice how they don't flex the same distance as each other? |

Wow, that is a new low. And I was really looking forward to this Metallo figure, because it look like a pretty neat version of an all robot verison of Metallo(Metallo usually has 3 looks: all human looking/John Corban, half robot/half man, and all robot. Sometimes with all robot, they either look like a huge robot with missle launchers and what not, or a more humanoid looking robot).
However that said, is it possible that you ended up with a defective Metallo figure in terms of the feet? I mean, I read on some other message boards how some people got Metallo but never mentioned the hollow feet. Just a thought. |

That is just pitiful. Mattel is trying to beat the manufacturers of those Dollar Tree toys at their own game.

If it is, I'd be surprised. The casting looks very even (no weird swirls or rough spots), and the feet match each other. Unfortunately, the way the package is made makes it impossible to see the bottoms of the feet without opening the figure.
At the extreme opposite end of the spectrum, my Four Horsemen MOTU S4 statues arrived yesterday. Leech is currently staring down at Metallo in disdain

That's unbelievably bad. I can't discredit the sculpt too much. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but at least it's pretty detailed. A lot of this is just inexcusable though. He probably could be improved if anyone knows how to do that black dye job and a few other fix-ups, but if that's what's needed to make him halfway viewable, we shouldn't be paying more than 4 or $5 in the store. I'm looking forward to Spencer's finished work.

The repainted Metallo has been posted [bhere[/b]. I didn't go crazy, just a quick custom. He looks a lot less like a dollar store knockoff now, which was what I wanted
