Batmobile
Super Powers Collection: Kenner, 1984.

This review is ?an oldie, but a goodie?. I was 23 when these came out and not a collector at the time. These had been off the shelves for nearly eight years before I started collecting seriously. I recently picked up one along with a MOC Super Powers Batman. I have a Super Powers The Joker as well, but he?s incomplete (missing the green hammer and his ?tails?). I hope to keep adding more Super Powers Collection items as I can get them.

The Super Powers Collection, based on the TV show at the time ushered in the modern era of the small plastic action figure. They are the last major series of figures not to have variants in Techicolor Batsuits. Toy Biz reused many of the Super Powers figures when they had the Batman License in 1989. Kenner?s The Dark Knight Collection Batman was based on a retooled Super Powers one.

SPECS:

The Batmobile is 13 3/8 inches long (closed) 15? (Bat-A-Ram and Bat-Claw open), 5 7/8 inches wide and 3 inches high. Push button activated Bat-A-Ram pops out in the front, Bat-Eyes pop up on the hood and Bat-Claw pops out at the rear. Rear wheels produce ?an exciting power sound? when car is pushed forward.

PROS:

It?s a timeless classic and an iconic version of the Batmobile. Well thought out action features that will keep working for years.

CONS:

None. It?s simple and well built.

OVERALL:

This is the way a Batmobile should be done, a simple effective classic design with multiple action play features. There are no missiles that shoot or lights that flash and you don?t miss them either. It?s sturdy enough for hours of play and has great value as a toy, but since these are nearly 23 years old and tend to be pricey for one in good condition, nobody will playing with these.

Perhaps some of our Members had one of these as a kid or had older brothers that had one. They don?t make ?em like they used too, so if you can find one for a decent price in decent shape then get one.

This does look good!

I'm glad I now know what it actually is (because until I saw this review, I didn't).

I saw a picture of it on another thread (I think it was Inzo's collection) and I meant to ask him what it was, but I never got round to it.

Good pictures, nice item.

Sweet! I've been wanting one for a long time. Thanks for the Review!

One small thing.. the cartoon actually follwed the figure line. Meaning.. they redid the show to be more along the lines of the figures. So instead of the toys being based on the toon, it was the toon based on the toys.. but still.. that line is classic..

Good to see you do an old school review, and I love the photographic recreation of the box art. I don't think I ever knew about the rear Bat-Claw feature. This is definitely a classic and near-flawless Batmobile, and it should only be a matter of time before I get my hands on one.

I understand that it's valuable, but my local antique mall has one (missing some decals and windshield bubbles) including Batman and Robin figures (without capes) for a whopping $50. Needless to say, they probably won't sell. I'd be happy to get a loose, complete SPC Batmobile for about $30.

Funny as it may sound, I started heavily collecting right around that time as well, at about 8-years old. I've recently acquired a nice amount of SPC figures, but only a few have their original accessories. Fortunately, most display just fine without them.

Nice review, FlaBat! This really is one of (if not the) best Batmobile toy, ever. I really like the box art-inspired pics.

I think FlaBat actually hit it, at least with the Batmobile: the revised "Challenge of the Superfriends" Batmobile debuted on the cartoon in '78:

Which was followed by the Super Powers Batmobile in '84. The Super Power Batmobile showed up in comics the next year:

I got this one when it was new for Christmas. Mine has been played with quite a bit, but the only things wrong are the windshields are cracked in places and the driver's side bat-emblem in rubbed off a little.

I have the majority of the action figure holding Batmobile toys that have been put out in one form or another, and they have not done anything as cool as this one ever. It is loaded down with weapons and features the rarely seen passenger seat. Count yourself lucky if you have one of these.
