Batmobile
The Batman ShadowTek: Mattel, 2006. Asst K4023, SKU# K4023

A new line of The Batman action figures, ShadowTek brings out another new Batmobile. It shares very few design cues from previous The Batman Batmobiles. It has the re-enforced battering ram front end from the first Batmobile and it has translucent blue fins and lights and sounds, but that?s where the similarities end.

It?s longer and leaner than previous Batmobiles with a wider stance than some, but not others. It?s more missile like with side pods that pop out with projectile firing cannons in them. It reminds me of the Iceglow Bathammer from Batman and Robin a little bit. There are various electronic sounds and lights. A red teardrop shaped button on the hood lights a red light on the nose and a blue ?Bat Signal? style light on the hood. Also pressing the lever at the rear to deploy the side cannons sets off the lights and sounds as well.

There is also less on this Batmobile than others. There is no inside detail except for the seat. No decals of gauges or controls on the dash or inside panels, no steering wheel and no seat belt either, which is something that is on all three previous Batmobiles. At the rear there is no afterburner or flames, in fact it?s the blandest part of the whole car. Almost like they forgot about it during design.

SPECS:
The Batmobile is 13 ? inches long, 5 7/8? wide (side pods closed) 8? wide (side pods open) and 4 3/8? high. Side pods pop out and each has a projectile launcher built in them. Electronic lights and sounds.

PROS:
It?s a new Batmobile. I think it?s better than the last EXP Batmobile version earlier this year but still not as good as the original The Batman Batmobile from a couple years ago.

CONS:
As a toy there are no real cons, however as a Batmobile design it could have been better. There are a few design cues carried over from past designs, but not enough to satisfy. I personally do not like the front wheels larger than the rear, to me that?s a major design miscue.

OVERALL:
It?s sturdy enough for hours of play and has decent value as a toy. There is a fair amount of detail, but it could have had lights to light up the sides when the side pods pop out like previous models had. Most The Batman figures should fit in it without any problems.

It?s a decent value and a good toy to present as a gift. In my opinion it could have been better, but it?s really not bad.

Nice review Cully, but I can see a Con.. no second seat. Where's Robin supose to sit? I thought that since he's came into the show, they would at least make a new Batmobile that he can sit in...

That?s a good point, but the other three The Batman Batmobiles were all single seat models. This version has the narrowest cockpit of the lot. Robin has the Moto Hawk, but he?s not in scale with this Batmobile.
The 60?s TV series had Batmobile toys with two seats and so did the Super Powers Batmobile, but except for the one from The New Batman Adventures all the other Batmobiles (toys) were single seat even the ones that were two seat models in the Movies or TV shows.

Well, not all of em, Toy Bix Batmobile was a two Seater, So was TAS and TNBA, they weren't side by side, but back to back. Which is what they should have done here.

The BTAS Batmobile

(there were at least 4 different versions, 3 were packaged as TNBA) all were one seat with a jet thing with flip down wings that pulled the cockpit out of the back of the car so Batman could fly off.

The TNBA Batmobile

(there were two versions) Was a two seat model with the second seat behind the first facing backwards.
The Toy Biz version of the 1989 might have two seats, but I only recall one seat in a really wide cockpit, so maybe it was two. The pictures of mine have it under the cocoon so I?m not sure. I never liked the open cockpit so I kept it under the cocoon.
The previous EXP version of the Batmobile should have had side by side seats. It looks to be wide enough. Batman and Batgirl could fit in without any problems.

darn it! not only does it only have on seat, it only has room for one seat! the exp and begins batmobiles coulda been customized to add a second seat, a little triming was all it needed (besides another seat). darn it! |

Is it just me, or does it look like that car was in the Death Star garbage desposer with Han, Luke, Leia, and Chewie?
I seem to like the first The Batman car the best. With the second Animated car topping it, even if the seats are front/back, rather than side/side (even though there is room).
Sum Nox!

Gotta say, I don't really care for this one much. That's a good way of putting it, MacWage; the car is definitely too tall & narrow. The first corner it took would put it over on its side (probably why they need the outriggers).
Nice review, FlaBat. Good point about the wheels, too. Larger fronts never looked right to me, either...even on the few cars that would benefit from them. |

The rear wheels being set that much wider than the front ones would be a problem turning the car at speed. It would want to tilt and raise the side on the inside of the turn. If anybody saw the amateur footage of the Batman Begins Batmobile in Chicago you saw it make a hard right on a city street and raise the right front side as it turned.
There?s no reason for the smaller rear tires either. They could have made them the same size and it would not affect the spring-loaded mechanism at all. They would have had to make the fin/pod just a bit taller at the rear is all.
The one thing that still bugs me about the design is no turbine jet exhaust at the rear. That?s a design element on just about every Batmobile for the last 40 years or more. Why it?s not on this one is a major blunder in my opinion.

Nice.. I have the Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin and the animated series BTAS Batmobile. It would be great if they built a '66 Batmobile in this scale to go with the line up this year... |

I think that if robin had moving legs they could have made a 2 seater. I also picked up a flight strike robin today and its prety cool! |
