REVIEW:
First things first: yes, I skipped #11. I have my reasons but it had to happen. Let's move on. I started and reviewed JLA with Brad Meltzer's run. I loved #0 and I liked how he wrote "Tornado’s Path" being like it was three to four stories that went full circle mode into being the newest JLA team. And his JLA/JSA was likeable with writer Geoff Johns. So he did well in this relaunch, in my opinion. I know he has been criticized but I understood from interviews, or from the stories here, of why he wanted to do it this way. So now we're getting to get Dwayne McDuffie as the next JLA writer, but Meltzer still has one more issue to do. So let's go see it.
Like I said above, full circle. This issue starts out with conversations about, at the time, newly-formed JLA by Green Lantern (Hal), Flash (Barry Allen), Martian Manhunter & Aquaman, all in Silver Age-like drawings. This goes full circle back to #0 with the big three starting the JLA. I like how Meltzer connected his last back to his first. Basically, in this whole issue, nothing really happens. Actually, that's not true. Yes, there are things that DO happen, but it leaves it off as a cliffhanger. More like Meltzer's last is a prelude to McDuffie's first. I think it is. The story is that the members, minus the Big Three, have Monitor Duty. During their switches, they learn something or something happens that let's us, the readers, know what is going to the characters. For example: Kendra learns that Roy has a daughter, a cutie named Lian, and Kendra and Roy's relationship has moved into the next step with them caught in bed after sex by Red Tornado. Red Tornado feels he has lost that one instance of humanity again, after his wife misses him and wishes he was home more. So this was a character issue.
BTW, it was nice, though they are not fully revealed that Martian Manhunter and Aquaman (the original) watch the new League members. For you fans out there, they say happen to say "at least until we come back". Maybe a hint to McDuffie's run?
Overall, this was a character issue. Expected from Meltzer, but I did like it. I also liked how this last issue from him was actually a setup issue for the next guy. Because in other writers, at least the ones I've read from, they just end it. Also, there was a bit of confusion over who was the hand that looks like press the Alert button. But anyway, this issue was a character issue, it was good, it sets up McDuffie's run for JLA, Luthor's name was mentioned and we saw Deathstroke in a cameo. All was good.
So see ya, Brad Meltzer!
RATING: 3.5/5
Next Issue: Dwayne McDuffie, well known from Justice League/Unlimited begins his run on JLA. First is the Wedding Special for Black Canary's marriage to Green Arrow. Then from there to #13, the Injustice Gang forms against the League.
You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
(crack!)
And I'm the surgeon.
