Seems like a real dumb idea to me. Superman isn't a dark character and doesn't need to be. Plus it seems like they're just copying TDK just because it's one of the most successful movies of all time. A reboot seems too early anyways all together.

i dont think a reboot is a bad idea, i think superman being dark is a bad idea though. i thought superman returns was ok at best, i mean we have young smoker lois lane, superman's illegitimate son, random boyfriend of lois' that happens to also be cyclops...

ehh..i think a reboot is ok. i think routh should come back though. he was a good superman in my opinion.

but how will they make a red, blue, and yellow super hero a dark character? there can only be one dark knight, and that's batman. there's a reason why there are so many of these super heroes; it's because they all offer something different.

I think reboot is the way to go, but don't make it dark. Just because it works with Batman doesn't mean it will work with every single character.

I believe the problem with Superman Returns was because they tried to hard to make it edgyier... Superman just isn't supposed to be dark though.

And they have no choice but to reboot it... How many people here honestly want the next movie to be about Superman's son?

The problem with it was Singer really had nothing to say. He used the X-Men films to make his own social statement, and it neatly tied in with what the untertones of the original comics were anyway. With Superman Returns it seemed pretty evident he was a fan of Donner's Superman The Movie, and that was it. And with that being the case bringing in good writers familiar with the character - ala the Nolans with Goyer - wouldn't work anyway, as he was set on making some sort of pseudo-sequel to STM.

Anyway, I think some people are looking too much into the 'dark' comment. That can be interpreted many ways, but I think the aim is for the next Superman movie to appeal to mainstream adult audiences in the way The Dark Knight did - so mature might be a better word. Superman Returns was too dark in the content and tone of the film - including lighting and camera work - giving the film a depressing mood. I doubt WB intend to go down that route.

The success of TDK came about because the team behind it were able to tap into the full extensive history of Batman - something Singer didn't seem willing to do with Superman - and that they got the character. Tone and everything. The only way for the next film to succeed is for the next director to hit the button in that sense. I don't think the film has to match TDK's box office. I think WB would settle for a similar return to SR, as long as the feeling towards the film from the fans is mostly positive - which was the case for Batman Begins, whereas Superman Returns wasn't quite so.

The Sups reboot needs to me more "real" to people.
THAT is what should be taken from the Batman movies.
Metropolis needs to look and feel like an actual city too.

(One day, a "World's Finest" film might me made that was good too. A plot that contrasts the way the two characters approach everything, from "trouble shooting," how to handle common criminals, get information, and the contrast on views and philosophy.
I like how that was handled in the B:TAS tie-in transition to the series revamp.
If Batman was left dark, while Sups was optimistic and hopeful (a boy scout), it could work well.

I agree, and I think that the dynamic between Batman and Supes would be very interesting to watch on film.

Ha ha, good point there. Actually now, a reboot doesn't seem like a bad way to go, it'd get rid of Superman having a son, and things will be fresh. I still think it's a little early, it just seems like we're getting too many comic book/Super hero movies at one time. I guess I'm looking at it as a movie fan instead of a comic book fan.

Anyways, I'd hate to see Routh replaced, I loved him as Superman/Clark and one of the few who loved Superman Returns.

comic book movies are where it's at these days. i mean you ask a regular joe what their favorite movie this year was, they're bound to say either dark knight, iron man, or hulk. super heroes are taking over the movie industry, that's just it. super heroes were dying out with comic books, and now they're alive again through movies...hopefully these movies will revive the popularity of comics too.

Yeah, I guess you're right. And it's not a bad thing. I guess I was thinking about how things have always been, that is, we don't get so many comic book movies like we are now. I guess I'm just not good with change.

Plus, a "dark" Superman story might not mean a "dark" Superman. Some of the animated stories were pretty dark, but Supes never lost his way.

I'm not a big Superman fan, but I'd be interested a Braniac/Luthor movie that climaxes with Brainthor ala JLU, and then a Darkseid movie.

What does anyone here think you do to Superman for a reboot though? I for one can't imagine what could be brought out of the character and mythos that would surprise anyone.

With the Nolan films we saw something that hadn't been put on screen before, and there was a lot of depth to it. They even expanded on some things that us comic book fans weren't expecting, for example the depiction of the Joker.

I can't really see what could be introduced to a Superman movie that could compare - but then I'm one of those people that only just about tolerates him because I like seeing Batman regularly kicking his arse. BYTBRazz

This guy goes into the hospital, okay?...
His wife's just had a baby and he can't wait to see them both.
So he meets the doctor and he says, "Oh, Doc, I've been so worried. How are they?"
And the Doctor smiles and says, "They're fine, just fine. Your wife's delivered a healthy baby boy and they're both in tip-top form.
"You're one lucky guy."
So the guy rushes into the maternity ward with his flowers.
But it's empty.
His wife's bed is empty.
"Doc?" he says and turns around and the doctor and all the nurses wave their arms and scream in his face.

"APRIL FOOL! YOU'RE WIFE'S DEAD AND THE BABY'S A SPASTIC!!"

I think they really need to make it about Superman's uncertainty... Him questioning whether a demi-god has a right to meddle in mortal's lives; and it should be about how Luthor's hatred makes Superman question himself. Also, Luthor should get cancer at the end of the movie, thus setting up for him making a deal with Braniac in the next one.

That's what I would do, but there are obviously people better suited to coming up with the plot out there.

Yeah, kind of Kingdom Come-ish with the whole interfering in Earth's affairs theme.

I'd say if they learn anything about the success of TDK, it shouldn't be this knee-jerk 'let's make everything dark and gritty' response, aping its style in a superficial way so typical of Hollywood, but that if you go deeply into the motivation of the characters, and examine what is so rewarding to so many people about the iconic elements of the mythology, you'll have a chance to translate all of that to a much wider audience.

Hope that makes sense...

This may sound weird to some, but that's what Superman Returns did for me. It got into the emotional and human side of Clark/Superman; him trying to fit in on earth, but kind of feeling like he didn't belong. Also, seeing Lois with another man and getting his butt whipped.

So really, I'd have liked to see a sequel to Returns. I'm still surprised that so many people didn't like it. But a trilogy sounds good too. I'm hoping Routh with return, even though it's unlikely. :/

I agree with you completely. I loved superman returns, and I thought that routh was great and am pretty disappointed they arent making a sequel.

But all in all, i dont see how they could make a sequel anyways, with the whole, superman having a kid deal, so it makes sense.

The only thing that I could see as a sequel is maybe a Superman Villain could kidnap Lois and Son and have Superman commit crimes for the Villian or Lois and Son Dies...The Villian I think the could work is Metallo because not only woud he be a threat to Lois and Son but to Superman as well
