Thanks to Grantzilla from supermanhomepage.com for this link that explains the dark, evil, twisted history of Superman V that spans over a course of nearly twenty years.

It's strange how no one has replied to this thread. I know the link is a long read, but it's worth it to find out how they were going to wreck this franchise.

Hm. I just read a big chunk of it, and I'm not even sure I can even believe all of that. It's just insane to thing adults would come up with that crap. There's so much mindless garbage.

Well, I've read more than a few reviews for some of the hardcore-idiocy-filled scripts so, I'll take it that they're real.
For people who don't want to read the link in its entiriety, here's a list of truly stupid things that appeared in Superman scripts over the years:
1. Polar Bears guarding the Fortress of Solitude (So they could make action figures of them. Who'd want to buy an action figure of a polar bear?)
2. Jimmy Olsen being gay.
3. Luthor and Brainiac merging, to become 'Lexiac' (and yes, I did think it was cool on JLU, but the way they were going to do it in this film wouldn't have been).
4. Superman's costume being a living creature that lived in a can.
5. Superman losing his powers and using a 'Supermobile' to get around.
6. Superman teleporting instead of flying.
7. Brainiac being assisted by a small, gay robot called L-Ron.
(The following entries are the silliest, stupidest thing to ever appear in a Superman script and I laughed quite loudly when I read them)
8. Superman impregnating Lois by sheer force of will at his deathbed. Within two weeks, Lois gives birth and dies. Within another short space of time, the baby grows up to be the second Superman and promptly saves the day.
9. LEX LUTHOR IS A DISGRUNTLED SHOE SALESMAN WHO IS POSSESSED BY THE DEVIL THAT MAKES HIM SMART AND EVIL.

I suppose I could try and accept that garbage as real. I just have to remember that these people who came up with this stuff were not only incredibly stupid, but had no understanding of Superman or concern for the true character whatsoever. And generally speaking, I'm sure there's people out there stupid enough to come up with crap like that, these ones just happened to have film degrees and things of that nature. Kinda scary when you think about it, how easily a character can be put into the hands of complete morons.

Well, I remember a good deal of that stuff from various press releases and stuff I saw in newspapaer and magazine articles over the years. So, at least most of it is true. From what I know of some of the people involved, I can easily believe the idiocy that has been displayed. It's a miracle that great movies like "Batman Begins" ever happen at all.

Shoesales Man! HAH!
At this point Bryan Singer only has three mistakes to own up to:
1) The suit. Oh how I loathe it. The colours! The size of the S! The lack of a yellow S on the cape!
2) Kate Bosworth. I don't think she's that good-looking in the first place, but that haircut makes her look awful. She should've had straight black hair.
3) Luthor seems like he's going to be fairly Silver-Age. I was really hoping to get the ruthless businessman from S:TAS and the more modern comics.
Marge: Homer, I've got someone here who can help!
Homer: Batman?
Marge: No, a scientist!
Homer: Batman's a scientist.
Marge: It's not BATMAN!! |

I love the costume. S shield is too small and boots are too "busy," but I love the heavy cape and dark colors. I like the look for Lois, she looks just like Joe Schuster's Lois. The Silver Age-esque characterization of Luthor is in keeping with the first 2 movies, which this one follows up on. I think we'll see some modern age elements to Luthor too, though. I hope so, anyway. Bottom line for me is that I trust Bryan Singer.

I like the suit, I have to say. I suppose the S could do with some work, but other than that, I love it. I love Kate Bosworth as Lois. They're trying to make her 'beautiful' rather than just 'hot, hot, hot!' which is what they do in a lot of superhero films (i.e, Kim Basinger in Batman, Nicole Kidman in Batman Forever, Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four etc.)
I do like the idea of Kevin Spacey as Lex, but this whole 'Kitty Koslowski' idea and whoever the hell Kal Penn is playing, I'm not buying it. I also don't like the idea that we're not going to be able to see Lex in his green exo-suit (or a variation of it), because if we were, they would have gotten a more physically fit actor than Kevin Spacey, but anyway, I'm not really sure if we would have seen the suit anyway.

I like this idea for Lois because is shows that even though Superman is nearly a god, he can still fall head over heels for a stressed out, obnoxious, brash reporter. I far prefer Superman going for someone imperfect like Lois as opposed to someone absolutely perfect like Wonder Woman.

I can't wait to see what kind of homages Singer has in store based on the Fleischer cartoons. He did say however, that he wasn't going to use any of the music from the cartoons, which didn't surprise me, but disappointed me all the same. They had a very catchy tune!

Anyway! Back to the evil history of Superman V! What does anyone think of Superman with a black costume?

Considering how crazy some of the other costumes got, I actually quite like this as a suit and I could definitely get used to it. I just think that black for Superman is a bit strange, since Superman is supposed to be warm and nice and not scary in any way. This kind of suit would be better for an evil Superman.

I don't know what this suit is supposed to be, but I don't like it one bit. There's nothing dramatic or heroic about it. It just looks creepy. Typical of Tim Burton. It's designs like this that make you glad this movie wasn't made.

This is what Superman's 'rejuvenation' suit was going to look like. I'm not too keen on the actual head, because again, it's too creepy. Other than that though, it would make a pretty decent suit, especially if it was only going to be used for about twenty minutes.

This just made me laugh when I saw it. Can you imagine how stupid an actor would look in this? My god, this thing is stupid.

I'm not too keen on this suit either, mainly because of the orangey cape, Superman's blonde hair and the strange mask he seems to be wearing. Other than that, it's okay, I guess.

This is photo of one of the proposed action figures and is in itself, a separate design for the 'rejuvenation' suit. Looks alright, I suppose and the face looks a lot like Nicholas Cage (I don't know if that's a good thing, though).
