Superman Returns, transferred to film just hours earlier, was given its first screening for the press Thursday night in Los Angeles.

Executive producer Chris Lee introduced the film, noting that it had just been put to bed and that some minor tweaks -- i.e. color corrections -- still might be made.

He also asked that the press not leak spoilers -- including a major one not in the film's novelization.

After the screening, members of the press were given a preview of the 3D IMAX treatment the film is getting.

IMAX president of filmed entertainment Greg Foster said Superman Return's "DNA" was ideal for the 3D treatment. The first trailer, which was done in 3D to show director Bryan Singer, and examples of the film's coming-at-you action were shown.

"We showed this to Chris Lee, Brandon (Routh) and Kate (Bosworth) and they were jumping up and down and giving each other high fives," Foster said.

In other notes:

* Screenwriters Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty have small roles in the film.

* The film seemed to generate a positive response, with applause at the end.

* Look for much more on Superman Returns on Friday and throughout the weekend here in The Continuum.

Makes me wonder what is in the film that's not in the book.

It's beginning to be like Batman Begins. Where the comic fans love it and theres not anything negetive, like a negetive review, about the film anywhere.

Indeed

I can say to you now with full conviction that every actor in "Superman Returns" hit their marks perfectly. Kevin Spacey, will surprise no one with his scene-stealing turn as the maniacal Lex Luthor. Brandon Routh turns in a performance that at many times plays as an homage to Christopher Reeve's legendary portrayal of Superman while managing to prove scene-after-scene that he now owns the role. Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane is the biggest surprise. I was worried her young age and appearance didn't suit the role of one of if not the most sophisticated supporting characters in comics history, but the actress pulls it off with a convincing maturity and grace.

AWESOME, The BIG THREE were cast well then .

To say "Superman Returns" contains high-flying action may be the greatest understatement since, well, "You will believe a man can fly." Breathtaking. Exhilarating. Truly awesome. These are just some words to describe the super-feats of "Superman Returns." You're left clamoring; clawing at your seats for more and more, thinking, "the next movie can't come quickly enough." And believe me, it can't. Still weeks away from official release, you will find no spoilers here, but let's just say message boards all over the internet will be aflame with debate. Web servers may actually catch on fire. Putting it bluntly: nothing can prepare you for the things you will see in this film.

SUPER, I can't wait to see The movie june 27 @ 10 :00 pm. ::supesymbol::

In other news:

* The film's opening credits are done in the same style as Superman: The Movie, with the hollow blue type moving across the screen.

* Producer Jon Peters, who had tried to develop a Superman film for more than a decade, on hearing Singer's idea for Superman Returns: "I remember getting goose bumps and feeling 'Wow...that is right on the money. The story is contemporary, emotional, action-packed and a love story, too. It hits all the bases that we want in a Superman movie."

* Frank Langella, who plays Perry White, said the time was right for Superman to return in a film version. "He's coming back at a time when people have a real need, I think, to sit there for a couple of hours with a big box of popcorn and a soda and have someone sweep them off their feet again."

* Noel Neill, who played Lois Lane in the 1950's Superman series, plays Gertrude Vanderworth, an heiress that falls prey to Lex Luthor's scheming ways.

Ever since Jean Grey died in X2 (she is mentioned in the President's office at the end of the book), I have always assumed that things are left out of the novels. It is funny how the books used to be a source for deleted scenes, but now scenes are omitted from novels. It really bugs me.

I never have been a huge Superman fan. Sure, I have more than a few Superman figures, and the Superman Collection DVD Box Set with Christopher Reeves, but still I have only a passing interest in him. So I never went to see Superman Returns when it was in theaters and I never bought the DVD when it came out either for some reason.

Well Superman Returns was on satellite the other night and I watched it for the first time. I was wondering why we have not seen a sequel to Superman Returns since the sequel to Batman Begins will be out next weekend. After watching Superman Returns I can see why, it sucked.

Not as bad as Superman 4 Quest For A Good Script was, I think that one sucked more, but I’ve never watched it. No, Superman Returns held such great promise, yet fell so far short. The acting was good, not great. Brandon Routh did a good job at Superman and even reminded me of Reeves in a few scenes. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther was great and a little under used I thought.

The rest of the acting seemed to be just going through the motions and lacked anything noteworthy. There was just not enough of Superman being Superman. Only a few really great action sequences mixed in with a lot of scenes that just dragged on too long. It was the script and the directing that needed work. I’d like to see them come back and take another stab at it. Superman is just as iconic as Batman and he deserves first class treatment like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Maybe one day he’ll get it.

if you want a good "Superman" fix, check out Hancock. His powered-up scenes were exactly what a Superman movie should be (well, maybe different attitude - but he same powers).

It’s not a matter of being bold. It’s just my honest opinion. I mentioned at work the next day that I just saw the film and what I thought and a couple of my coworkers agreed. One went so far as to say he turned the film off in the middle because it was so bad. I watched the whole thing hoping it would get better, but it never did.

I think it's a good film.

It doesnt touch my favourite versions of Superman; I've prattled on (on these very boards) on countless occasions about how much I love the Fleischers, George Reeves, Christoper Reeve (I even quite like number III) & S:TAS. I don't believe it stands up against those - but I like it nonetheless.

Well, I'm one of the few people who actually loved this movie. The main complaint seems to be that there's not enough action in the movie, but I still find it very entertaining. Superman Returns is a movie, to me, that's full of cinematic magic.
