According to reports back in the summer time, WB stated that Superman Returns would have to hit the 200 Million mark in order for a possible sequel to be greenlit. While Alan Horn (head of Warner Bros.), Legendary Pictures (who helped fund "Superman Returns", and director Bryan Singer had all come out and said a sequel was going to happen, many nay sayers stuck to their guns and doomed the idea of a sequel on the premise that "Superman Returns" would never make that magical dollar figure.
But as of October 23rd, 2006; Superman Returns has passed the 200 Million making its domestic total of $200,006,305. Including its international figure of $190,000,000, the film has grossed $390,006,305 worldwide.
While it took a while to get there, the fact that the film made it to this mark should mean good feelings to those wanting a sequel. Already with Alan Horn's, Legendary's, and Singer's comments, the possibilty seems most likely.

You don't get it, boy... this isn't a mudhole... it's an operating table.
