The only map I've ever seen was from the comic books.

Yeah, the only two I am aware of is the one from the comics, and the one from Batman Begins that is in the "Art of Batman Begins" book.

Writers tend to be hesitant to publicly release maps, as they are locked into them once released. Thereby, they MUST follow them, which can "mess up" a storyline.

As a result, there have been several maps and batcave diagrams/layouts released over the years in the various comics.

The 1989 movie used the shoreline of Vancouver, as I recall, as a base and "flipped" it around.

I THINK Batman Begins adopted one of the comics ones from recent years.
My brain keeps saying it was the "No Man's Land" map, but one of the comics experts may correct me on that one.

As far as I know and can find, there is not a map of Gotham on the show that is large enough in scale to show more than a portion of the city.

Yeah, they used the no Man's Land map as a base in Begins. But they changed a few things around like adding the Narrows and renaming locations.

As I recall, the lead up to "No Man's Land" is the FIRST indication that Gotham is an ISLAND.

Is that correct?

It might have been implied, as Gotham is roughly based on New York, which is mainly an island-> Manhattan.
However, I remember Gotham maps that show it as a peninsula,

Any earlier BLATANT statements that Gotham is an island?

I tend to agree that Gotham City has always been patterned after New York City as a large island, but with elements of other big cities like Chicago tossed in as well.

On Gotham and New York . . .

Gotham IS a nickname for NYC, and was called such by Washington Irving.
It is summarized that Metropolis is the "good side" of New York, while Gotham is the dark.

Over the years, elements of other large cities have been thrown in over the years.

I was wondering if there were other in-text/comic references to Gotham City as an island in the past.
(Any maps, etc. in older books where it is visually such? A reference to the island?)

We are talking of almost 70 years of comics . . . (60 pre-cataclysm)

When I think of Gotham, I think of Manhattan, The Bronx and Chicago.

I think of Manhattan because of the island and thats how I imagine Gotham to look from above.

The Bronx is simply because the last time I was in New York (1994!!) all the books on NYC I read before hand said dont go there (unless you're on a bus to the zoo or the Yankees are at home).

The Chicago thing is like the Bronx; I've read countless books on the blues and it's pretty clear that for donkeys years both the South & West sides of Chicago were some rough, tough places. Also, I've never been to Chicago, but the pictures I see of the skyline remind me of Gotham slightly more than New York's does.
