501 - THE BATMAN/SUPERMAN STORY
PLOT:
When Superman presents a check from Metropolis to Gotham in it's rebuilding after the alien invasion, he meets with Batman but isn't interested with the new Justice League. But when Lois is kidnapped, Superman & Batman must come to the rescue in the team-up of the well-known World's Finest.
REVIEW:
Going back to Comic Con 2006, the preview to the fourth season of The Batman had an image of Martian Manhunter as he would appear on the show. Following that were teases and what-ifs on that two part finale would be. Once "The Joining" aired, we got the first team-up between Batman and another DC character on the show. It was followed by the appearance of the Hall of Justice and four well known members of the Justice League. Once the season ended, and the fifth was coming, the question was now "who else?” When I first heard this season filled with team-ups, one thing came to mind which fit this season perfectly: Brave and the Bold, which I review. It is Batman-related, so that doesn't mean it's wrong. But now, in the month of Sept 2007 that is of animation & live action shows and a DTV of Superman, the first superhero Batman teams with this season is of Man of Steel himself: Superman! Here is the first of the two part premiere and the first episode of the new season.
The new mayor of Gotham (Yes, Grange is gone now) speaks with Gotham’s citizens about time since the alien invasion seen in “The Joining”. While Jimmy Olsen and Dick Grayson bicker which of Batman or Superman is better, Clark calls Lois telling her he’ll be late and appears as Superman to give a check to Gotham from Metropolis. All goes well until Metallo shows up. Reaching to the junkyard, Batman & Robin show up to give Superman a hand. After Metallo is blown up, destroying his skin and revealing his robotic nature, Robin manages to get the kryptonite and runs off so Superman can handle him once and for all. Batman won’t give back the kryptonite, and Superman thanks his as Bruce Wayne when Lois & Jimmy show up and take a picture of him. Luthor is mad because Metallo failed, and with no one able to help him, he tells Mercy to get ready for Gotham. Inside the new Batcave inside the Wayne Enterprises (nod to the ‘70s comics), Batman & Robin meet Lucius and discover the new Shadow-Tek equipment. Bruce meets with Clark in his apartment and asks if he is going to the League’s first meeting, he declines wanting to work alone. After Superman uses the sun to destroy the kryptonite, Lois is kidnapped by Black Mask.
So after little in-jokes and the wondering since the show started, Superman finally appears on the show, so as his supporting cast and well-known villains. In this universe, Clark Kent is more along lines as Brandon Routh was in “Superman Returns” in the bumbling aspects, not at all like Christopher Reeve that was what I was thinking from Burnett’s interview. Even Lois is somewhat similar to Kate Bosworth’s portrayal, even toward Clark. Superman is somewhat different here. Alan Burnett said that this Superman would be more held back and not be interested in the new JLA. And as we can see in the episode’s beginning, Superman is not very trusting of Batman and wants the kryptonite Metallo carried. He is not like the normal Boy Scout he is known for; he is almost in the vein similar to Batman at times. Robin even says that. There is even a scene where Robin is testing out his new rocket and Superman just passes through, even causing Robin to move from Superman’s path BY Superman’s speed. So he is different here. As for continuity, there isn’t anything said as to when Superman appeared in what point during The Batman series. I guess that’s up to us then, unless the show does so. So Superman is different and I enjoyed this version.
Overall, this episode was great. I liked Superman, the changes they did to him for this show’s universe, as well as Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Jimmy Olsen. Speaking of them, I think they did made a good choice in using Dana Delany’s, George Newburn, and Clancy Brown reprise their roles from the DCAU into this show. When they appeared, it never became like “hey, it’s DCAU Superman meeting TB Batman”, it was TB Superman meeting TB Batman. Superman & Batman here was handled well due to what changes were made, and also, this episode seemed more like a Superman episode than a Batman one. I’m ready for what this season is going to bring, and part 2 of the next episode.
RATING: Yay (Good)

At the end, I got the feeling of HUSH. But it was good. The voices were right no too, well, I thought Clancy's Lex could have been a little different. But still, it was a great start to what looks to be the last season. It's a shame that they cancel these shows right at their peek. And you know, unless they do a new JL show, in a few years, there will be another Batman series.
Anyway, back on topic. It was a great start and I think we're in for a good season.

Yea.. he said more than likley. Once a series reaches 54 eps, it can go into Syndication. TB was lucky enough to get a 5th season. but after that, who knows. Honestly, it needs to go as far as it can. With the new movie next year, we need TB.

I liked this episode, they started off right where they left off in season 4. I also like how they used the same voice actor for lex luthor in superman the animated series. What is this about this being the last season, where did you read this? |
