Born with chronic hyperpituitarism, a disease that causes grotesque facial disfigurements, Preston allowed himself to be turned into a clay creature so he could reshape his face into something presentable. But the clay powers also made him murderously violent, so he was confined to Arkham Asylum. He was broken out of Arkham by Lady Clay, Shondra Fuller, and with her, he sired a son. Later, under orders from the Joker, he killed Selina Kyle. He was eventually returned to Arkham, where he dabbled in sculpture. He escaped one last time and teamed up with his son to rob the Gotham Charity Fashion Show, but his efforts were stopped by Detective Reese and the Birds of Prey.
