PLOT:
When all was said and done, she may have been loyal to the Bat, but the Bat was a symbol for another man's fight. And now, that man is dead. And with Bruce dead, Cassandra Cain has no more stake
in the fight. So, with a lot on her mind and with very little explanation, Cassandra Cain stripped of her Batgirl costume and left it behind. Leaving it in the care of her good friend Stephanie Brown, the girl who
never can seem to give up the vigilante fight. And on that rainy night three weeks ago, a new Batgirl was born. And hey, she only promised Tim that she'd give up being the Spoiler, right?
It's clear to the watchful eyes of Dick and Damian that whoever this newcomer is she isn't near as good as her predecessor. But it's a hard act to follow. Cassandra Cain was once the leader of the League of
Assassins, a mute killer, heck she
even lead the Outsiders for a period of time. But a chance has come and Steph is living it up, enjoying the
perks of having the Bat on her chest.
But that isn't the only change to come to Stephanie Brown's life lately. She's begun college. A freshman at Gotham University. Her mother has no idea that she's continued her vigilante ways under a new name. And nor does she have to.
Change has come to Stephanie Brown's life and she's promising herself that she'll keep her promise to her mother and give up the crime fighting ways. Be a normal girl.
For Barbara Gordon on the other hand it seems that some things will never change. For instance, weekly dinners down at Caroline's Diner with her father. It seems a new charming young detective has just transferred in and Jim thinks it would be good for
his daughter to be happy. But happiness is more elusive than he may know. And strangely it's the things in life that can't be changed that bother her the most.
She tries her best to hide it, but the anger and frustration over her disability lie just below the surface. Her friend
Leslie Thompkins can sense this seething anger and tries to persuade Barbara into undergoing some physical therapy in the form of some Murderball. Attending one of those games, Barbara notices a familiar face
out on the court - Wendy Harris, the daughter of the Calculator and one-time Teen Titan who lost her brother and her legs in a freak attack. But despite Leslie's suggestions and notions, Barbara is in no position in her life
right now to be mentoring anyone. And the seething anger does appear to be
dissipating anytime soon.
That evening, as she's getting ready for bed, Stephanie allows herself to be drawn into the allure of the glowing Bat-Signal in the night sky. One final time, she tells herself. A riot down in the Western Quadrant has police at a stand-still. One of their men went in to
respond to a shooting when the paramedics refused and now he's being held hostage. That man? Detective Nick "St. Nick" Gage. And luckily Batgirl is there to save his chops. There's gunfire, shattered noses and a rocket launcher explosion. Everything that would make an otherwise
perfect send-off for her crimefighting career.
The next morning, Stephanie wakes up, body aching and eyes blurry, regretting the decision to
forgo her homework assignments for one last hurrah. But at least it's over. Or is it? As she heads downstairs for breakfast she
finds Barbara Gordon sitting there waiting for her. And Ms. Gordon knows a thing or two about being a Batgirl. And she does not look happy.
