PLOT:
With the Insiders defeated (at least for now), the Outsiders return to find a very different Gotham than the one they left.
They arrive back for their debriefing only to find that the Batcave has since been closed for operations.
Indefinitely. Standing before the sealed shut steel doors of the Batcave, a green holographic projection of
Alfred Pennyworth, their commander, appears before them. The news, as if they could not guess from the flight in, is anything but good.
Arkham Asylum has been decimated, this they already know (Geo-Force has with him a piece of the wrought iron Arkham gate as a new trophy for the Batcave). But as Alfred explains, the situation is far worse than it seems.
Three high priority inmates, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc and Clayface have all scattered to different corners of the country. And according some reliable sources, there is a distinct
possibility that if they are not apprehended soon they could
become something far worse and more sinister than they already are. Complicating matters even further, Alfred goes on to say, is the fact that there has been a breach within the Bat Family. Their security has been compromised and he has every reason
to believe that one of the Outsiders may be compromised as well. As such, his location and even the identity of the new Batman are restricted pieces of information for the time being.
Their previous mission of deep cover ops working outside of Gotham's direct interest has also been put on hold. For now, while those inmates are on the loose, their top priority is to retrieve them and get them back into
custody as soon as possible. And so, with the Haven in ruin, the Batcave closed, and their commanding officer at an undisclosed location, the team sets out on their second mission. Creeper, Halo and Katana head to the
bayou in Louisiana on the hunt of Killer Croc. Geo-Force and Metamorpho head underground to the mines of Wyoming where Clayface has holed up. And Black Lightning and Owlman head to Alaska where Mr. Freeze is currently setting up shop
in an iceberg floating down the Chena River.
But when they finally do cross paths with the abominable iceman, they quickly find themselves outgunned and outmaneuvered by the madman who takes them both hostage, trapping them inside giant icicles and bringing them into his den. There he has set up a small medical center of sorts.
Using the electrical currents from Black Lightning's body, Freeze is able to power up the equipment and intends on performing a little invasive brain surgery on himself to remove the death capsule placed there by
Black Mask as a muzzle to keep the Arkham escapees in line. Even though an unexpected projectile hidden within Owlman's otherwise
innocuous helmet frees them, after they take down Freeze the two heroes agree that it would be wise to remove the
Black Mask's handiwork as soon as possible as to give him one less bargaining chip in his battle for Gotham.
Unfortunately as they contact Alfred to report their successful mission it seems that things have gone from bad to worse in Gotham. Something horrible has happened and although he does not elaborate as to what it is,
Alfred tells them that it may be radio silence from here on out. They are to return Freeze to a special holding cell in Gotham but from there on out they may be on their own!
