From Superherohype.com

As a follow up to last year's blockbuster Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. The announcements were made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Christopher Nolan revamped the Batman franchise in 2005 with the immensely successful Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale in the title role, which chronicled the early years of the superhero. Nolan first garnered attention from critics and fans in 2000 with the groundbreaking drama "Memento," which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct the thriller "Insomnia," starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and recently wrapped production on "The Prestige," with Hugh Jackman and Bale.

Bale was most recently seen in the ensemble cast of Terrence Malick's "The New World." His other credits include "Little Women," "Portrait of a Lady," "Metroland," "American Psycho," "Laurel Canyon" and Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun," which was his first starring role.

Ledger most recently earned Oscar Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the award-winning drama "Brokeback Mountain." His other credits include "Casanova," "Monster's Ball," "Lords of Dogtown," "The Brothers Grimm" and "The Patriot."

"Chris' unique vision is what made 'Batman Begins' such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of 'The Dark Knight,'" said Robinov. "We also can't wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker."

"I'm excited to continue the story we started with 'Batman Begins,'" added Nolan. "Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale's Batman is going to be incredible."

Production is set to begin on The Dark Knight in early 2007.

Its like if they will continue like this, the whole trilogy will be: BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT, THE CAPED CRUSADER.

And if they did the same for Superman: SUPERMAN RETURNS, THE MAN OF STEEL, THE MAN OF TOMORROW.

But some people, and me to a point, believes the film is actually BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT. Its just that people will call it THE DARK KNIGHT for short. Like the Star Wars for example. The full title is STAR WARS - EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE. We just call it A NEW HOPE.

That is a cool enough name, but I can't help but think that this is a working title like Intimidation Game. I would not be surprised if they changed the title to something official in late '07/early '08.

From what I remember, the Penguin is also supposed to be in the sequel although he might have a second-tier role to the Joker.

By the way, I do not have an issue with the new movie title. The fact that Nolan wanted to keep it simple makes it easier for fans old and new to get acclamated(sp?) with the new movie.

Yeah, I'm not amazed by the title, but I do like it. The mainstream may not recognize Batman very well by the nickname "Dark Knight," so it works in that respect as not being too simple or bland. Darknight made a very good point though; it could just be a working title after all.

A lot of people have said that nothing could top Batman Begins, but I'm starting to think this next one could become the new best Batman film. I'm already wondering how the third film would be able to top this.

I like the title. I still think Ledger was a odd choice though, maybe it's just because I don't like him, ha ha.

Oh well, very cool news.

I am anxious to see how Ledger can handle the Joker. For the name, I like it, its simple and kick ass all at the same time, and I doubt its a working title. TIG was just to throw off unwanted press and stuff, but I think "The Dark Knight" pretty much gives it away. I just hope the film in Chicago again, so I can literally stalk the set now that Im old enough to go up there by myself lol. And get BYTB some illegal set pics of course Smile (just kidding WB...wink wink...)

Yeah, I heard the next one is suppose to be darker than Batman Begins. I think Joker can be a really dark scary character, instead of silly, if he's written right. And I'm sure Nolan can do it.

I was hoping they would use a title that had more individuality to it, instead of going on and on with movies like "Batman Escalation", "Batman Equilibrium" or "Batman Continues To Return After Begining Forever, With Robin"

As for Ledger, I don't remember ever watching a Ledger film, but I've got a friend who says he's pretty good, and this is the same friend who convinced me to watch Batman Begins, so I think Ledger will do good, He certainly can't be worse than Nicholson.

And I think Dark Knight will be awsome; they'll have more room for action and mystery because they have less character introduction to take care of. And they'll have some thing that has never been done before, A menacing psychopath Joker on screen! I can't friggin wait!

I wonder if the Joker they wanna do is the same from ROTJ. Where he was quiet and dark and scary.

It's been a while since I've seen "Return Of The Joker", but I seem to recall him still being kinda cheesy bi-polar, rather than flat out insane. Usually he is portraid as a guy who's all laughs and jokes until he spontanuosly bursts into a rage and kills someone, but my vision of The Joker is a guy whith a sick sense of humor who is perpetually happy, the kind of guy who laughs his ass of while he beats someone to death with a mallet.

Some people say what make The Joker scary is that you never know what he'll do next, but I think what makes him scary is that if he catches, he'll kill you and have a damn good time doing it.

Film Focus talked to Bale about Dark Knight:

"I just love that title," Bale told FilmFocus, "You know, nothing's written in stone yet, but I like, very much, that it doesn't have 'Batman' written in the title. This take on Batman of mine and Chris' is very different from any of the others and everything else always had Batman in the title. I think this is kind-of distancing it even further and saying, 'Hey, this is a whole different creature from what has come before.'"

Much as Ledger is a wildly different choice for the Joker; in Tim Burton's 1989 version the role went to The Smile himself, Jack Nicholson. "Absolutely," Bale told us, "Heath is very much into what Chris had done with the first one and he's very passionate about the role. And he's a really good actor so we're going to see something very special from him."

And what of the status of the project at the moment? Can Bale drop any hints? "You know what, you're going to get people coming out and shooting you in the head any second if you keep asking anymore Batman questions," Bale joked. Or, at least, we hope he did. "I'm learning about it right now; Chris and I have only just finished working on The Prestige together and I have another project before we start on Batman. I know I'm in very good hands and Chris is keeping me informed about what's going on. But more than that and I'll be whisked away in a loony van, you know, off to Arkham Asylum!"

OKay, so The Dark Knight is the title, he's happy about Ledger, now this is stupid but when he joked about going back to Arkham, is that a plot point?

See? That was a dumb question.

I love the new title. I personally, don't think it's a working title like Intimadation Game, because Intimidation Game was supposed to throw off nosy fans. Obviously it didn't work. The Dark Knight immediately screams Batman to fans (if not everyone). It would be very silly trying to throw off fans with an obvious name like that, wouldn't it?

My theory is that WB aren't even going to bother throwing off the fans and they're just giving the name straight up.

Oh and by the way, Nate, I don't think THE CAPED CRUSADER is a very good name. That just reminds me of the camp Batman. The Caped Crusader is dead and buried and should remain that way.
