thought I would make a a thread on general sequel updates because there is none. here's the first bit to start it off, coming from BOF
?Treatment Insider? is back with a few more details. I contacted him a few days ago because I wanted to know his thoughts regarding all the recent rumors that have been floating around. He was nice enough to get back to me and here?s what he had to say:
?I checked out your updates and as far the treatment I read goes, there [was] no Dr. Harleen Quinzel, Dr. Arkham, Dr. Lesile Thompkins or Talia Al Ghul in the sequel. That doesn't mean they won't be in it, just that they weren't in the treatment I read. Keep in mind that this was also the first draft and things do change and I haven't been able to get my hands on any new drafts.
I doubt we will see any doctors from Arkham as it is shut down and ?The Narrows? is still pretty much a disaster area and a haven for various villains. There is a small subplot about Wayne trying to help fund the clean up and rebuild The Narrows -- particularly [one] involving a massive tenement complex that will be the setting of perhaps the most spectacular action sequence in the film.
Now about casting. There has been al ot of talk and rumors going on about who may be lined up for the sequel. A lot of it is just rumor and speculation. This is the crazy time -- expect to hear a lot more of this until people are actually cast. From what I know, Bettany and Hulme are still the only ones I know for a fact that are, or were looked at for the role of The Joker. This is my guess, but the way it looks it will be one [of those two] who nabs the role.
Liev Schreiber is the top choice for Dent and it's his if he wants it -- which I'm pretty sure he does. As for Hoffman as the Penguin, I can't confirm this.
Although pre-production is underway as we speak, expect it to go full steam ahead late summer/early fall. [At that time, there should be] official confirmation on details of the story and casting with shooting still planned for spring '07. Interesting how my hunch that Nolan's brother Jonathan might pen the script turned out correct.?
And I can confirm that "Treatment Insider" did tell inform me that Goyer had written the treatment and that he thought Jonathan Nolan would be the one to write the screenplay...
From VARIETY (Subscription Required). Warner Bros. has hired Jonathan Nolan -- brother of director Chris Nolan -- to pen the sequel to BATMAN BEGINS. Chris Nolan and previous screenwriter David Goyer have already wrote the treatment for the film that will be used as the basis for the new script. The sequel will most likely hit theaters summer 2008. Legendary Pictures is expected to again fund 50% of the sequel as they did for BEGINS. Chris Nolan will officially sign on to direct soon...
sounds interesting but in my opinion its to bad that goyer isnt penning the whole script. We'll have to wait and see if jonathan nolan can stand up proud in Goyer's giant shadow.

"Andy" just emailed me this morning telling me that KROQ radio in Los Angeles ("Kevin and Bean" reported that Paul Bettany is The Joker and Hugh Jackman is Harvey Dent in The Sequel. Bettany I can believe; Jackman I'm still doubting -- a lot...
Clarification on above rumor: "Banefreak" chimed in saying he heard said radio report on KROQ and they mentioned that both Paul Bettany and Hugo Weaving were up for the role of The Joker. They also mentioned Hugh Jackman as a Dent candidate. Again, don't put too much stock into these rumors, except for the Bettany one
"Jindrak" is back with a few more bit of sequel info. He tells BOF that the Penguin subplot is now iffy, there is no truth to the Hugh Jackman/Hugo Weaving rumors (as previously reported), and the timeline for the sequel may be around a year -- give or take a few months -- after the events of BATMAN BEGINS...

It will be tough to top Batman Begins. Has Jonathan Nolan ever written anything that compares with Batman Begins? I hope he?s not getting the gig because of his brother. I want people who know and understand Batman to write the screenplay.

Jackman not in the mix! how do I know...... (BOF of course)
UPDATED: Aussie BOF'er Pat filed the following report:
"Hugh was in Australia two weeks ago to promote his arena tour of 'The Boy From Oz,' which starts in four capital cities Australia in August and runs through the middle of September. I've seen most of his interviews promoting the tour and he never mentioned Batman. He DID mention that right now he's filming THE PRESTIGE with Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan, so maybe that's what the person heard."
My take: Jackman isn't doing BATMAN. Plus, BOF has been told that Hugh is not in the Bat-mix by several trusted (as we have previously reported). I believe that filming THE PRESTIGE with Nolan, Bale, and Sir Michael Caine is the root of the "Jackman in Batman Sequel" rumors, but there is simply nothing to it.

Got the following tidbit in today I thought may interest you all. A few tidbits from a friend of BOF that sort of comes straight from the horses mouth, so to speak (he explained how, I just can't tell you all the details). Anyhow, expect:
- "They" pretty much have got the plot for the film outlined.
- Nolan has been re-going over all of the various Batman comics even more to comb for fine details.
- They (Nolan and co.) want it to be even darker than BEGINS.
- The studio is supportive of creating something as accurate to the Batman comic books as possible and less about it being some kind of summer popcorn "mega-hit."
Sounds good to me people. And to WB, don't worry, just let Nolan and crew roll with it! I know I trus 'em...
imo darker = better, as long as it stays at a reasonable rating (pg, 14A in canada, etc)
