the only thing i didnt like about bale is how his batman voice was more of a raspy growl rather than a firm, bold, threatening, and assertive voice that was shown in btas. to me batman is supposed to sound like he knows what hes doing 24/7 therefore sounding more firm and assertive rather than raspy and growly. dont get it wrong, thats not to say bales voice was bad, when i first heard the flass interrogation shivers went down my spine, bale had a great voice i just prefer kevins voice.

I disagree that Conroy sounds the best as Batman. I think if he was a live action Batman, he would sound silly. However, in BTAS, Conroy is exaggerating his voice a bit. In real life, his voice is actually less deep and more raspy, the way I think Batman should sound. Remember that Batman's primary action is scaring street punks into submission. The stories we read are just the interesting aspects of his career. So, I think that Batman should sound raspy and brooding most of the time. I like Bale's voice better than any of the cartoon or movie voices, but then, I like everything about Bale's performance!

i still like conroy the best. i think he gets pretty scary when he yells. remember that TNBA episode where he was gased by scarecrow? he started yelling at robin to untie him. yeah...that was pretty freaky.

Batman Forever and B&R were both great Batman stories....classic Batman stories that shouldn't have been sugarcoated with bright lights and nippled costumes. After Batman Returns, the films became a who's who of Hollywood with every major actor lobbying for a role as a villain. BF was also the dawn of the digital age in cinema.
All of this added up to a loss in character development. To quote a big dinosaur flick from the 90's, "They were so facsinated with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." And thus the failure of those films in capturing "Batman." It became less and less about the story and making a good film, and more about marketing and selling product.
Thankfully Nolan, Goyer, Bale, and all the others got the ship back on course.
Well said, my friend, well said.

The growl that Bale introduced is really cool. It does help make him feel more like an urban legend and less of a mortal man. At the same time though, you have to wonder how well Batman would be able to keep up such a voice. There'd come situations where he'd lose his cool a bit and revert to his natural voice without meaning to, while Conroy's voice is naturally clean and deep, as it is for Batman. You could suspect in the upcoming film that Bale's Batman may not use that rasping tone quite as consistently, given he faces some new challenging scenarios. Just a thought I guess.

It seems this thread should be linked with this one:

Wow!!
I?m impressed with the open-mindedness in comments being posted within a thread located in what seems to be this website?s divine acclamation? BATMAN BEGINS? (rather a strongly formed overall opinion with its subtitle on this forum as BEST MOVIE EVER!).
Everybody has such great points!
-----
Every interpretation of Batman will have its great aspects and its downfalls because we are dealing with a fictitious character.
Each actor?s portrayal brings with it? the previous work of that actor.
We may have subconsciously already formed an opinion of these people.
I think that is why Adam West and Kevin Conroy are long time favorites BECAUSE for the most part, they have no previous baggage.
They are Batman in their own right.
Besides? the luxury of having an ongoing series allowed that character to become imprinted onto those actors.
The case with Michael Keaton being so revered can be attributed to the fact that prior to Batman, he had been widely accepted as a comedic actor? he already had a likeable persona. It was easy to doubt his involvement as Batman? the role was such a 180 for him. When he delivered such a convincing performace, our opinions changed. There is no going back.
Ever since, his association with Batman is hard for him to shake.
Sort of like Tom Hanks previous to his Academy Award roles vs. the sort of roles we see him in now.
Besides? Michael Keaton donned the cape and cowl twice!!
Val Kilmer and George Clooney have had great roles before and after Batman.
(By the way, I too don?t blame Clooney for the demise of the former franchise? I blame the script, and the overall production).
Like previously stated? there is both good and bad that can be said for each of their portrayals.
I personally do NOT automatically think ?BATMAN? when I see those guys in films today.
With Keaton? I think ?BATMAN?.
As for Christian Bale?
It?s personally taking me a while to accept what has happen these past years with the downfall of the previous franchise? then the reinvention and dominance that the Nolan film(s) are apparently trying to overshadow.
If this new franchise doesn?t blow it? and Bale continues to remain Batman through these next years? then I?m sure he will undoubtingly become one of the overall presence in Batman history.
If I had to ?pick on? one of the physical attributes of Bale? it would be that he has sort of a weird cheek, lip, jaw thing going on.
One of the things I notice immediately while he?s wearing the cowl is that he almost looks to be lisping his lines.
AND although functional? the costume and cape do nothing for me (not that nipples on a bat-suit do)? he looks more like Darth Vadar than Batman. I hope it evolves over the next films.
For me? the best bang-for-your-buck is KEVIN CONROY!!!
The Animated Series sagas have little to complain about.
It shows the most complex depiction AND unlike the film actors, Bruce Wayne never shows sign of his arrogance or torment to the outside world. Only those in his inner circle see his true self.

I think Kevin Conroy's Batman is cool as a cartoon, but a live-action Batman with that voice would sound somewhat silly. I think Bale wouldn't make a bad voice actor. He was great in the Begins game.

Yeah, Beyond did that subtitle. But since at least 99% of fans consider it the best, I didn't feel it should've been changed.

I noticed that too. When he's speaking with Alfred about becoming Batman, and he says "But as a symbol...", I thought it looked as if he said "thymbal". Kinda funny, but as you said, very nit-picky.
Kilmer had a pretty funny lispy scene in Batman Forever, where Bruce asked Chase, "Tell me, Doctor. Have you ever been to the thircus?" Watch it again, and you'll know what I mean.

I think that all the actors-YES ALL- put something to the part. Some more, some less. But the point is no matter how good an actor is he could never please all of us simply because its impossible for everyone to like him the same way!!!
Remeber there is only one who is Batman!!!THE ONE IN THE COMICS!!!
