u know the old batman? the one in the 40's? He is sooooo lame! i dunno why bob kane made him that way! let me give u an example: robin bonks a guy on the head with a bucket/pail,"mister, u look rather PAIL!" he says. batman then says,"ouch! what a bad pun, Robin!" if that is'nt lame, i dunno what is!

That was great dialog for the 40's. Comics were for kids, they didn't have to write to adults like they do today. I just finished reading Bob Kane's autobiography (Batman and Me, if you haven't read it check your local library for a copy), and even he admitted that the puns went way too far. He kinda wished that they hadn't done them. To Kane's credit, Bill Finger wrote the stories and dialog.

Anyway, that's after Robin came in and the camp quotient was pushed to the max! Before Robin, Batman was at his darkest. The only time he smiled was when he watched Doctor Death burn alive. He gladly let villains fall to their deaths and often helped them along by kicking them off buildings. And then there was the fact that he carried a semi-automatic around with him and shot his enemies down where they stood. Maybe this is why Batman is so dark in the Keaton movies. Maybe Burton was trying to link to the earliest stories in the best way possible.

I'm always attracted to the early stories back in the 1930's and 40's. That's where it all began, so it's awesome to me.

The writing was kind of corny sometimes though, how after almost every sentence was a exclamation point. But it was still dark, like how The Joker would kill all those folks, he was really scary back in the day.

I enjoy those first stories too. They're incredibly simple, but they got the heart. And because of that simplicity, they're not too complex for kids to read, just morally questionable. It was funny when Batman said "Not so fast, friend!" as he came in on Joker in time to stop him from injecting Robin with venom (Batman #1). Such a gentlemen. :shy: The strangest line though had to have been when he wiped off a woman's makeup and during the struggle said "Quiet, or Papa spank!" Then before you know it, he's cheerfully playing baseball on the cover of World's Finest with Robin and Superman.

I dig what you are saying. Like the dudes are saying that was a more simpler time. I have always loved the Dark Bat Vs the Campy.

Kane did practically nothing when creating Batman. Finger did the most. Poor old Bill died broke and uncredited. I'll miss ya!
