I was surprised to see there wasn't a thread for 300 yet (unless I missed it). We saw it over the weekend, and it was great. The acting, writing, special effects, story, etc. were all running on all eight. If you're still on the fence about it:
If you liked the graphic novel, you'll like the movie.
If you liked the commercials, you'll like the movie.
If you liked Sin City, you'll like the movie.

I watched a program a few nights ago about the filming of it. I think it was on A&E or History. Everything I've seen for it looks so intense and awesome. One thing I found funny is how all the soldiers are sculpted so perfectly like body builders or fitness models. This probably wouldn't have been the case back then with their poor nutrition and the idea that muscle sculpture doesn't have a lot to do with legitimate strength or fighting skills. But the creators have mentioned that this is a modern interpretation of those days, and those types of superhero bodies are what we see as powerful and awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I love Sin City - but this doesnt greatly appeal.
I'll definitely go and see this (just because of the obvious connections) but it's not something that I'm anxiously waiting for...... |

That's the same thing one of my wife's friends said. She thought Sin City was great, but couldn't see why we kept referring to it when we were talking about 300. It does seem like a pretty wide gap, but they essentially did the same thing for both: Frank Miller's GN was used for the movie's storyboards, and the drawings were used as character design sheets. Since he has such a distinct style, you can definitely get the same vibe from both stories.
Yeah, definitely not a 100% historically accurate piece, but there's enough of the original story there that you can look at it as a modern bard's tale. Details were exaggerated and everything is designed to be appealing to us today, but the core is still there.

It was the best thing I've seen in a long time. I especially love the art direction and the fights.
The two drawbacks for me are: I wonder if someone not into the comics would enjoy it as much. And I wasn't as moved emotionally as I thought I should have been.
All in all, I loved it and will own the dvd!

I think anything to do with Miller has got to be worth a look.
I'm not going to be that fussed about historical accuracy, because I know as much about what actually happened as I do about the current GDP of Lithuania. My guess is that the actual story is the subject of much myth/legend/debate anyway (?); but I don't know that.
Re Sin City - I'm always amazed that a lot of people seem quick to be critical of it. I'd never read a page of it before I saw the film, but I thought the film was amazing. To me, Sin City really looked a comic on the big screen.
I don't even know if 300 is out here yet. I saw the trailer for it when I saw Ghost Rider, so if it's not it'll be soon. |

I haven't seen it but I've heard good things. Hopefully I can sneak into a showing this weekend (I'm too young to get into it normally haha, makes things difficult)

Nudity? I'm sold.
But seriously, I'm a huge fan of Sin City; so this will probably hold me over till Sin City 2.

FYI:
The battle itself is fairly clear (as far as history of that period is concerned in general). The Greek and Persian accounts are preserved and known. The true flow of events and persons is able to be decently understood. This particular battle has been HEAVILY studied by generations of warriors from modern West Point discussion back to the Romans and the later Greeks themselves.
As for hollywierd/novel versions,
I am used to seeing very well known and interesting, even factinating events mis-shown, misinterpreted, and altered for the most odd reasons (see "Pearl Harbor" in contrast to "Tora, Tora, Tora" . Thus, the problems of "historical accuracy" may bother me, but shouldn't be any worse than "Troy" and are COMMON in movies covering times long past.
300,
I am planning on seeing it, either in the theater or/and on DVD.
Sum Nox!

Sin City was definitely higher on the disturb-O-meter, but being a Miller story 300 still has it's fair share of nudity, decapitations, grievous woundings, and disgusting creatures. The "R" rating is deserved. Most of the blood & guts are done in a comic-esque style, but everything else looks pretty realistic.

Without getting into details, it is a sex scene, but she isn't getting it "that way."
But, you're probably too young to have strangers explain it even privately, so just let it go for now and take the movie as a whole.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Everyone worked out a bit right before shooting every scene so they'd look as pulsing and massive as can be. I would think that's done for a lot of movies though actually. Most all of the backgrounds and lighting were CGI, so it might not be too outlandish to assume that they touched up some muscles here and there.
