This was actually a really good movie. Under rated because it had a short theater release and went to video. It did sell well though. I like how it actually explores of why Batman continues to be batman (Not just how he became, we already know that) His love interest in this
movie was really the only one I ever though could be with Batman the most.
It is animated, but geared towards a older audience. Batman does have a few fight scenes but this movie goes into the history and psyche of the batman.
Story-line wise and of staying to the comics, this was the best batman film till Batman Begins IMHO. And this is being just over an hour of playtime. A really impressive feat. Any other comments on the movie? |

I'd really LOVED to have seen this at the cinema! How cool would that be to see BTAS (or on off-shoot of it) on the BIG screen.
I know it wasnt in theatres very long when released (and I'm in England - I suspect it was never in the cinema's here) but it would've great to see.
There was an "animated" film season at quite a big London cinema recently but it was off no interest to me at all - largely arthouse nonsense, with a few bits of Manga thrown in. Nothing Superhero related at all. Was quite disappointed.

Yeah - although if in Canada I suspect you're in same boat as me!
From Wikipedia...........
Box office
Despite all the positive reviews the movie received, it was not a huge success at the box office. Costing less than a million dollars to make and promote, it only grossed $5 million domestically and $11 million worldwide, and due to its low earnings, most theatres stopped showing it after only one or two weeks. Blame could be laid on the lack of advertisement and the rush decision to put it in theatres at all; up until mere weeks before its premiere, directors Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski believed it was going to be a DTV effort only. All future animated Batman movies would be released direct-to-video.
However, when the film was released to video on April 26, 1994, it succeeded in turning a profit, earning millions more than in its limited theatrical release.

Although just reading that again, the $6 worldwide must've come from somewhere - maybe I'm doing the cinema's of UK and Canada a dis-service!

Seeing it on the big screen would actualy have been a bit of a neusance; the film was made using tha same aspect ratio as a T.V. screen, so they had to cut a bit off the top and bottom to help it fit the wider theater screens.

Well, after being aware of this movie's existence for about as long as I can remember, and being a Batman fan for around the same amount of time, I have finally seen the entire movie just today.
A lot of times I'm not entirely sure how much I like/dislike a movie upon a first viewing. But this was a really good movie. Terrific story, genuinely moving and mesmerizing. I like that it's quite different than just another episode of the Animated Series. And what happened to the Joker after the climax? Anyways, it's good to finally have this movie in my DVD collection. |

The movie was originally intended to be a finale to the series in case it wasn't picked up for another season. It's very well possible that they intended for Andi to kill the Joker, giving up on life with Bruce by allowing herself to be overcome by vengence. Of course, being the Joker, it's never impossible for him to escape inescapable death.

The movie did come out in theatres around Christmas time 1993. I think it might have even been Christmas Day, though I could be wrong on that. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I may pick it up soon on DVD, since Toys R Us Canada has it for a price of $7.50. |
