Jumbo Carson was a rival mobster to Al Welles and was marked for death by the latter. Escaping the assassination attempt, Carson fell into the river near Hanson's Research Laboratory. The water by the lab was saturated with chemical runoff from Professor Hanson's attempts to perfect a formula to shrink people in size; Carson proved an unexpected test subject and was immediately reduced in stature. Soon after a foot high figure dressed in a scarlet costume was first noticed in Gotham City when he came to Robin's aid in apprehending Welles and his mob. Then, to the Boy Wonder's shock, the Ant-Man? absconded with the very jewels Welles had tried to steal! Carson, as Ant-Man? had intended to plague Welles in revenge, but was instead captured by Robin. Without a known cure to Hanson's formula, Carson remained permanently in miniature form.
