PLOT:
Darkseid's fall and the subsequent crisis surrounding it has all culminated in the ruination of both space and time. With the multiverse deteriorating and all of time breaking down and melting away,
Superman is called once again into the 31st Century on a mission of the utmost importance. Having just returned from his trip through the multiverse on the behest of the Monitor
Weeja Dell, Superman asks Braniac-5 what could possibly be so important as to call him away from the crisis at hand.
Braniac replies that although the threat behind the Legion of 3 Worlds had been taken care of, the crisis in which Superman is currently taking part in threatens all of time - including the 31st century. Struggling to remember a key security sequence as memories of time continue to
evaporate, Braniac-5 carefully leads Superman to the Legion Armory in search of a futuristic weapon that Braniac-5 believes could be the solution to their problems. Sequestered off from the rest of the armory and sealed in pure Inertron for protection sits Geh-Jedollah-The-Absolute, or simply put "The Miracle Machine."
Developed by the Controllers using the blueprints for the Will-Powered technology of the Guardians, this ultimate technological artifact is capable of converting thoughts into reality. Realizing the danger of even a stray thought altering reality for the worse, the machine was kept hidden - Superman being the only person
entrusted with seeing the machine. As the Man of Steel steps towards the core of the futuristic god weapon, his body begins to fade from existence and Braniac shouts that he need only gaze into the machine to use it...
One thousand years in the past, the camp of villains is preparing to enter the great battle. Lex Luthor stands at the gallows with Sivana, watching as Calculator is forced through an eternity of painful death and resurrection. His power suit was allowed to be charged up in anticipation for the battle but he plans on using it for other means. Since the technology behind the Justifier helmets is based on the
simplistic designs of the Mad Hatter, Dr. Sivana has concocted a short-range signal jammer to combat the helmets. The two decide for varying reasons to form a resistance against Libra. As the hooded "hand puppet of the gods" comes to confront them, Luthor blasts Libra with a burst of energy from his suit but upon impact, Libra's body simply disappears.
Meanwhile, the apocalyptic battle of the bridge into Blüdhaven continues. As the Checkmate Biomacs aide the efforts of the super-heroes, Mary Marvel continues to square off against Supergirl. With the old gods fading, Black Adam hears the screams of the New Gods cackling in his head and he is able to deduce that Mary Marvel is in fact
possessed by the evil Desaad. Using the last of his energy, Shazam is able to tackle Mary and use his magic word to transform them both. De-powered, Mary returns to normal but fears that she can never say her magic word again for fear of unleashing the twisted sadistic god inside of her.
Nearby, Mr. Tawky Tawny finds himself face to face with the blood thirsty Kalibak. Despite his rather genteel appearance, Tawny's Legendary Tiger Tea gives him the strength needed to defeat Kalibak, slicing open his insides and ripping out his intestines. Tawny fears that this means he must now suffer the wrath of Kalibak's army but instead they all fall down around him, their swords lowered seemingly awaiting his command. The addition of the tiger army seems to occur just in time as the super-heroes
order the second-wave of strikes to begin. Unfortunately for them, the Female Furries arrive on the scene and begin infecting the heroes with the Meta-virus that threatens to kill off and/or depower all of the Meta heroes.
The Checkmate castle isn’t fairing any better either as the shields give up their last ounces of strength and begin to shut down. Inside however, Renée Montoya's tour of the Checkmate facilities continues. From a well of psychics to a den of sorcerers, the tour showcases all of Checkmates exhaustive efforts to protect humanity. The tour's final stop is a room containing what is being called “Lord Eye.” The machine, part of a program called “Black Gambit” is set to be used as Checkmate's Omega Offensive. It seems as though the agency plans on using the abilities of Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi (collectively known as the Atoms) to tunnel through the wall separating the universes. With that accomplished they plan to
emigrate and potentially colonize on another parallel Earth. Renée has been called to Checkmate's attention because they feel her unique experiences as both a lawn enforcement official and pseudo-ambassador to the Metas put her at the top of the list of candidates for leaders of this new
pilgrimage.
As the last of the defenses continue to crumble, Black Gambit seems inevitable. As the Black Gambit systems begin to go online, Shilo Norman
struggles to tell Mr. Terrific about the symbol which he and the Super Young Team have painted on their faces. A letter from the alphabet of the gods meaning "freedom from restriction", Mr. Miracle feels that the Metron symbol could be the solution to the Anti-Life. Nevertheless, he and the Super Young Team begin to prepare for the battle ahead -
which for some of the young superheroes, could be a first.
Orbiting far above the planet, the heroes stationed at the JLA satellite also find themselves calling upon the symbol. As the Anti-Life corrupted Green Arrow and Black Lightning arrive to round up the space refugees, Tattooed Man uses the symbol to resist the Justifier helmet. The unexpected resistance allows Black Canary enough of an opportunity to shut down the gravity on the
satellite, changing the battle field to their advantage. Outside of the station however,
the entire Multiverse has become visible as the Earths of the Orrery continue to flush downward towards some dark horizon. Back on Earth, Nix
Uotan continues to follow his destiny monitoring these activities but Metron warns him that the humans will have much more to worry about than just Darkseid if Black Gambit does in fact succeed in
piercing through to the bleed.
Part of the remaining humans focused on getting to Darkseid are the flashes. With Jay, Wally and Barry under one roof, the three speedsters plan their attack on the dragon god. Armed with the knowledge he returned with from the great beyond, Barry has concocted a plan to
use their combined speeds to break through to place where Darkseid sits in personal singularity - currently behind the reach of light. As part of this plan, Barry hopes to use the Black Racer who has continued this entire time to chase after him through time and space.
Little do they know however, that a Justice League member already stands on the
periphery of Darkseid's evil chamber. The god of evil urges Batman to come out of hiding and accept that the Anti-Life Equation has been proven true. Batman steps out of the shadows and confronts Darkseid over the death of Orion. The death, which splintered like light through a prism across multiple realities, wounded Darkseid beyond repair causing him to use Earth as his personal dank sewer to crawl in and die.
Batman then un-holsters the gun he took from Simyan's research lab containing the god killing bullet that struck down Orion. Standing face to face with the physical embodiment of all evil, Batman breaks his lifelong stance against the use of guns and fires the bullet directly into Darkseid's heart. As the New God topples over, he manages to unleash one final blast of
what he calls the Omega Sanction - the death that is life. The light rays race around Batman before cycling back and striking him in both his head and his heart.
Outside, the battle for Blüdhaven is put to a stand-still when Superman bursts forth out of nowhere. His unrelenting heat ray blasts like a machine gun, bursting through
the protective barrier surrounding the Command-D bunker. He crashes through the bunker, touching down in a huge explosion which sends a cloud of dust reaching far up into the crimson sky.
After a brief moment of stunned silence, he returns from the rubble clutching the lifeless body of the World’s Greatest Detective Batman.
