PLOT:
Even before God imparted the gift of free will upon humanity, His first act of creation was to give light unto the world. But now in this darkest hour, it would seem as even that most basic gift has been robbed from Crispus Allen.
Finding himself "dead" once again - separated from his Spectral powers by Cain and the Spear of Destiny, Crispus tries repeatedly to light a candle in
remembrance of the son that was taken by his own hand as the Spectre. Still angry at the supposedly 'loving' God who had ordered him to do such a heinous task, Crispus's spirit has drifted away from the
side of his friends as they continue to do battle in Gotham. Now that Cain has forced God's own Spectre to recite the Anti-Life, it would seem as though humanity's last ray of hope has been extinguished and Crispus has decided to seek out
more somber company in these, the last hours of man.
The Radiant's power is fading - her faith in God wavering and her protective barrier keeping Cain and his army from entering the church is slowly breaking down. Having retreated inside the church, Renée and
the Huntress soon realize that their only chance of saving mankind is to somehow get the spear away from Cain. For the lack of a better idea the two women decide to head outside and do what they do best - confront the problem with their fists.
Unfortunately for the Huntress and the Question they have more than just Cain to contend with. Outside waiting for them are Catwoman and Batwoman, corrupted by the Anti-Life and powered by a seemingly unstoppable rage
propelling them forward in battle like two vicious attack dogs. In an attempt to stop the blood-thirsty Catwoman, Huntress fires an arrow into Selina's
shoulder but to Helena's surprise, Selina rips the projectile from her flesh and uses it to stab
Huntress right in the heart! To make matters worse, Renée is held in a choke hold as Cain approaches and plunges the Spear of Destiny into her mid-section.
Although it's projectile energy blasts proved powerless against the Question, the bleeding tip of the Spear of Destiny still proves to be a
formidable weapon, slicing through
Renée's internal organs.
But just as things looked their bleakest, Renée Montoya uses her fatal wound to her own advantage, lodging the Spear further into her belly and pulling herself back from Cain, stealing the weapon away from him. Before Cain can attack Montoya, he is tackled by
three unlikely helpers. The three men responsible for murdering Sister Clarice leap into action, holding Cain down while Montoya staggers away with the Spear.
According to plan, the Radiant, re-charged by the sudden change of tide, bursts forth in an explosion of light sending evil cowering off into the shadows. She uses her healing powers of mercy once again, this time to
heal the wound in Huntress's chest. Unfortunately she says that because Renée's wound was caused by such a corrupt weapon, it is beyond Radiant's powers to heal.
Only the Spear, once cleansed of evil and un-corrupted once more, is capable of healing a wound that it has caused.
In order to cleanse the Spear it must be used to heal a soul rather than to destroy one. Renée is given the opportunity to heal her friend Crispus Allen to which the woman, once
plagued by doubt replies, "No Question."
Far away standing at his son's grave, Crispus Allen finally manages to light that candle - but it is of no use. He is suddenly thrust back into the fray outside of the church, held in the arms of the Radiant. Crispus realizes what Renée has done for him and it has brought joy to his once troubled heart, cleansing the Spear and allowing Radiant to
heal Renée's wound. Crispus, realizing now how important and powerful being the manifestation of not just God's wrath but his Might as well - claims the Spear of Destiny for his own and upon proudly resuming his role as
the Spectre, undoes all of Cain's evil, freeing millions from the Anti-life.
Finally understanding his role as the Spectre, Crispus stands in awe as he witness the true glory of the Radiant's powers. It would seem as though in the ensuing battle with Vandal Savage, the three men that once cost
Sister Clarice her life were now losing their own. As the men lay bleeding out on the ground, Sister Clarice bestows peace upon them granting them the mercy of sweet release into the awaiting arms of God.
Now, standing before the legions of Cain's followers - Crispus passes judgment upon the unworthy - igniting those that chose of free will to follow evil in a mighty hellfire. Then God's Wrath is once again
visited upon Cain. This time, Spectre deems that no longer will the mark of Cain be invisible - all will see Vandal Savage's mark of eternal damnation. The immortal embodiment of sin is then transported to a remote location where local villagers are so
reviled by his sight that they begin pelting him with trash and other debris.
As they both prepare to head-off towards parts unknown to continue battling the minions of Darkseid, Huntress has one final question to ask of the Question herself. Knowing that
she didn't restore Crispus Allen to life (since that would not be enough to 'cleanse his soul' and the Spear itself), Helena asks what Renée really did to heal the soul of her former partner. Renée
just smiles - some questions are best left unanswered.
Far away from the wreckage of downtown Gotham City, Crispus Allen watches as his son Jake returns from the dead and walks into the warm embrace of his family members who are there waiting for him.
