PLOT:
In life he was known as Kung, the Assassin of a Thousand Claws. So powerful that before being brought over to the Allied side he had nearly succeeded in assassinating Winston Churchill. At the time, much like their German counterparts, the Japanese had been using the sacred power of a mystic artifact to cast a sphere of protection over their native land so that the Justice Society could not cross into their borders and use their meta-abilities to interfere. Because of this, Kung was given the sole task of returning to Japan and convincing Emperor Hirohito to surrender. When the deadline lapsed, Kung, like many others was unfortunately at ground zero when the first of two devastating nuclear attacks was launched by the US on Japan. Enraged and bitter over his fate, Kung was cast into the afterlife realm of the Outer Darkness where he and countless other spirits are denied their final reward due to their unwillingness to forgive their enemies.

While racing through the mists surrounding the Rock of Eternity alongside Billy Batson's father, Jay Garrick unknowingly skitted past the realm of Outer Darkness where he was recognized by Kung. Tempted by the possibility of retribution and their own resurrection, the other spirits in the Darkness banded together with Kung and became a Shinigami - a death spirit bent on revenge. However, their escape from the nether realm and quest for vengeance of course earns them the attention of God's own hand of vengeance - the Spectre! Collecting the remaining JSA teammates (save for Mr. Terrific and Stargirl), Spectre transports them all back to 1945 Japan where Alan, Jay and the others are trapped.

Barely able to insulate themselves and survive the nuclear blast thanks to Alan's ring, the team has been taken to the beaches where they are forced into yet another stand off with the Shinigami. Spectre reveals that Kung had lied to other spirits. The resurrection would be for himself only. And in order to be reborn, Kung needs the five Justice Society members (together forming a pentagram representing the five elements) to die on Japanese soil so that he can be re-born. Tearing Kung's spirit away from the others, The Spectre confronts the wayward soul. Refusing to accept Spectre's authority over him, Kung is sent back to limbo with the others whom he had deceived. Returning to present day New York, the Spectre removes any lingering traces of Kung's presence from Stargirl's body and then bids them farewell.

The threat is passed. After their research yields no proof that they had somehow disrupted the time stream by their presence, Jay, Alan and Ted have one final matter to attend to. Though viewed as a senior member of the team, Stargirl is still just a teenage girl. And one who does not need the distractions usually attributed to teenage life. As such they collectively agree to have Atom Smasher clarify to Courtney that a love affair between the two could never be. Heartbroken she stands silently weeping in the hallway while the other senior members begin to make preparation for the arrival of the new recruits...
