PLOT:
As if nothing at all had happened, the All American Kid walks away from the stabbing, quietly making his way to the bathroom where he washes his hands. When he returns to his room, King Chimera's questions seem to snap him out of his daze. But the boy remains oblivious to the fact that just moments ago he may have just murdered one of the Society's premiere members! Downstairs, Michael Holt lay bleeding out on the floor of the laboratory. Frantic calls for his help from the frontline continue to go un-answered. And things there are not looking pretty.
Out of the entire responding team, only Stargirl and Flash remain standing. Yet for some odd reason, the ambushing squad of villains has been ordered to leave Stargirl untouched. They don't dare cross her in order to retrieve the
unconscious bodies of her teammates and claim their bounty. Realizing that (at least for the moment) Courtney was safe, the old man disappears in the blink of an eye, racing with every ounce of energy in his body in search of re-enforcements. And within mere moments he's found him.
Though Kent V. Nelson may not officially have been indoctrinated into the Justice Society, his predecessor was. And all of the villains present know the gleaming golden helmet of Dr. Fate. The nascent Fate is able to pull together enough of a show of force to keep the villains at bay while the rest of the JSA recovered. And the team's
resurgence is enough to force the bad guys into retreat. Yet this seemingly advantageous situation later becomes the impetus of a disagreement that would soon threaten to tear the entire team in half!
The militaristic Magog wants to follow the villains and squash out the threat while they remain at a disadvantage. But Stargirl's unreturned distress calls to the Brownstone promts Jay to want to immediately return to home base and check on Mr. Terrific. Deciding on a compromise, Jay and the elder-statesmen return to the Brownstone while Magog, Powergirl and the younger teammates go off in search of the villains.
The site awaiting for them at home is none too pretty. Terrific's pulse is weak and he remains in critical condition while the team of Mid-Nite, Fate and Green Lantern attend to his wounds. Having rounded up nearly all of the villains and interrogated those able to speak afterwards, Magog and the others return shortly after the others. David Reid's mood of frustration over not being able to round up the entire bunch is only exacerbated by the situation back home.
The headquarters has been compromised. And beyond Obsidian's already diminished state, the Brownstone's remaining security measures have been disabled. Someone has made invaded their personal space and nearly toppled their entire organization. Something he attributes to the team's confusion on the battlefield.
But another elder statesman, Ted Grant, is none too thrilled with someone questioning the team's
judgments and barking orders in the midst of a battle. The two hot-heads continue bickering at one another until eventually the two wind up at each other's throats! And in the end it looks as though soon there may not even be a team for this
unknown master enemy to disrupt!
