THE PENGUIN

One of Gotham City's top criminals, Penguin almost always tries to cover up his criminal activities with some other false enterprise. He often pretends to be going straight, and usually wins the hearts of all Gothamites before revealing his true motives. He also loves discrediting Batman and Robin. But Batman always wins out because he doesn't concern himself with popular opinion, his dedication to solving the crime at hand allows him to cut right to the heart of Penguin's schemes.

Penguin also fancies himself to be quite the ladies' man. He carries himself with an aristocratic air, and is always formally attired. A cigarette is always on hand, and since he is one of refined tastes, Penguin uses a cigarette holder.

ABOUT BURGESS MEREDITH
Burgess Meredith played the Penguin for all three seasons. Born in 1908 in Cleveland, he worked as a merchant seaman, then a businessman before he went into showbiz. His enthusiasm for the part of the penguin was astounding. He enjoyed every minute of it. Burgess would call every week asking when the Penguin was going to be back.

For the show Burgess had withstand hours of makeup, and dye his hair when it was found that a wig would work. He also had to put up with a monocle being glued to his eye socket with gum.

Burgess was the perfect person to play this part. He perfected the waddle, and the quack, in fact the quack sound was to actually disguise the fact that the cigarettes he was using in the long holder irritated his throat. Burgess died on September 10th, 1997, leaving behind a long list of credits. But everyone will remember him as The Penguin
