PLOT:
Renée Montoya has assumed the leadership of a murderous heathenness cult and for that, she must pay for her sins. Before Montoya can stand and receive her
judgment, Crispus takes her away from the ship and gives her one final glimpse of her lover, Kate Kane (Batwoman) in
remembrance of the friendship they once shared. While the Spectre's magic safely
whisks away Montoya from the cult member Wrack that was trying to kill her, the Spear of Destiny is left behind for the Cult
to take control of.
Unable to stop and aide Kate in her battle with the monsters unleashed upon Gotham alongside the Anti-Life Equation, Renée is once again teleported to a familiar setting - the roof of the Gotham City Police Department. It is there that she tries to
appeal to whatever part of her former partner that is left within God's Spirit of Vengeance. Just as all appears to be lost for Montoya, a sudden bright light surrounds them and they find themselves in the presence of
The Radiant, God's Messenger of Mercy.
Hosted by the recently deceased Sister Clarice, The Radiant appears to grant God's Mercy to Renée. Crispus lashes out at the Radiant, questioning God's supposed Mercy and asking where it was when he was ordered to kill his own son. Crispus breaks down sobbing on the Gotham PD rooftop while Sister Clarice tries to
tell him that his powers as the Spectre are more than just simply taking one life at a time - and those powers are needed more than ever now...
Far away, Sister Wrack arrives on the shores just outside of the home of Vandal Savage shortly after the Anti-Life Equation had been released on the internet. The immortal warrior steps outside and stands to greet the Cult who says that his time has finally come. They pierce his chest with the
Spear of Destiny, re-awakening The First within him. Cain has risen and his first order of business is to hunt down the Spirit which marked him - The Spectre!
Back on the Gotham PD rooftop, the reunion is finally complete as the Major Case Squad comes upstairs and greets them. But something is very different about Cris and Renée's former co-workers. With the
First risen, the Anti-Life Equation has taken over
and those possessed seek to end the free will of those left untainted. Protected by the same force which protected Libra, Cris and Clarice are unable to stop the approaching mob of possessed Gotham PD officers. Before Renée
can be taken over by the Anti-Life Equation, Clarice teleports her away.
Renée finds herself on the street amongst the denizens of Gotham City who have been taken over by the Anti-Life. She looks over and finds Kate lying on the ground and rushes over to her. Unfortunately, Kate too has become one with the Anti-Life and she reaches up and grabs
Renée by the throat, pulling her closer to her jagged teeth and bleeding gums as she whispers "Anti-Life= Loneliness+..."
